"Fun with interesting real life issues"

I had only recently seen the film, The Devil Wears Prada and I certainly recommend seeing or reading that book before enjoying this one. For enjoy you will -- well, I did anyway. And the first rate narrator, Laurel Lefkow, enhanced the characters who were delightfully real.

It's about the racy cut-throat world of New York fashion and is probably as relevant to most readers as a fantasy novel. But the author managed to insert some pretty interesting real life conundrums about the role of the woman in a highly competitive and pretentious workplace and they were artfully, romantically and sympathetically resolved.

I am addicted to talking books, but only mystery/thrillers or some particular authors like Terry Pratchett.

    "Boring Wears Prada"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This story could have been titled "I have got a husband and a baby and I am the only woman ever to have done this". Pullleeeease!! Nothing happened until the second last chapter when she dumped her husband, admitttedly for a good reason.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I'm going back to the Mysteries and Thrillers list.

Did Laurel Lefkow do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Laurel Lefkow is always a good narrator.

What character would you cut from Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns?

    Andy

    "A terrible first impression"

Granted I have only listened to the first two chapters of this book before coming online to write this review but I think it at least says a lot that I was disappointed enough to do so. As a light and easy listen, Devil Wears Prada was a real hit with me- a funny and engaging story that I have returned to more than twice. I'm guessing that most people reading this will have thought the same (and if you haven't already listened to Devil...then navigate away from this page, and download that instead).

A key problem with this sequel is that it is written in the third person, rather than from Andy's perspective as in the first book. This leaves the listener feeling much further removed from the character this time around, and has made me wonder if I just never noticed that Andy was so irritating right from the start. Rather than seeming to be a fairly realistic young modern woman (career minded but still focused on friends, family and having a good time), this incarnation of Devil's central character seems to be almost entirely wrapped up in pink, girlish fairytales of knights, white horses, weddings and dresses (I'm serious- all of these get a mention in the first chapter).

It's fair to say that Devil...wasn't always consistent in the way Andy was portrayed (she apparently had no interest in fashion but for some reason her narration included a detailed description of every shoe, dress, nail polish she cast her eye over), but this is just ridiculous- I thought her dream was to write for The New Yorker..instead she's editing a bridal magazine called 'The Plunge'? Ok, so I haven't persisted far enough with this download to give a really fair assessment but I'm just glad that Audible allow returns- and, as it is pretty much crystal clear that this book was written to cash in on possible future movie rights, I just hope Meryl's got more sense.

(One last note- the only saving grace of this download as far as I can tell is the narrator Laurel Lefkow. I know a lot of people can find American accents a bit grating but Lefkow has a soft, emotive voice that I enjoy listening to. Unfortunately here, she just couldn't save the material- if you like her narration, and haven't heard 'The Time Traveller's Wife' (in which she plays Claire- the '..Wife") then do try that as the male narrator there is also great and the story far outranks its movie adaptation and anything by Lauren Weisberger...

What would have made Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns better?

If the story actually had anything to do with the first book.

What could Lauren Weisberger have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

If the story had more substance and the characters had the same personalities they did in the first book. They lacked every quality that made the first book enjoyable.

How could the performance have been better?

The performance was done the best as the narrator possibly could given the lack of actual story.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    None, whatsoever!!

    Any additional comments?

This book actually made me fall asleep on occasions! The most boring book I'v ever read and I'v read a lot!!

"A good sequel to the original."
If you could sum up Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns in three words, what would they be?

    A good sequel.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Andie, she really develops over the course of the story into someone you can admire.

Have you listened to any of Laurel Lefkow’s other performances? How does this one compare?

    No.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    No.

"I think this one was "phoned in""
Would you try another book written by Lauren Weisberger or narrated by Laurel Lefkow?

This book was not a patch on the first book. Gone were the intricate characterisations and the fear and loathing that the " devil" caused. There were no detailed plots, no plot turns and nothing that made you feel that you were there. I got the impression that the author was given a large advance due to the success of the first book, but their heart was really not in it. Like many second books/films in a series this was a shadow of the first one.

What could Lauren Weisberger have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Give depth of chacterisation. Add more to the "one line" plot and introduce a few twists. Make Miranda a devil again.

What didn’t you like about Laurel Lefkow’s performance?

The narration was quite flat but I think this was more the book tan the narrator.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment. I greatly enjoyed the first book and film. This was nothing like the first book, even the author must have been bored.

    Any additional comments?

Very sad, the first book had so much promise.

    "Not the sequel I expected"
What disappointed you about Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns?

I really enjoyed the first book as a study into driven individuals, high standards and interesting workplace approaches. Loved it.
This book is nothing like that. It is a study in female insecurity - I kept hoping it would get better, but it didn't.

Would you ever listen to anything by Lauren Weisberger again?

    No likely

What aspect of Laurel Lefkow’s performance might you have changed?

The story is completely the insecure mind talk of the leading character. There isn't much of a plot at all. Miranda doesn't even appear in the book until 2 hours before the end.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns?

80% of the book where the lead character agnoises about her weight, clothes, relationship and everything. This is more like Bridget Jones. As a professional woman I don't relate.

    Any additional comments?

It could have been a rollicking tale of cat and mouse revenge within the publishing industry, which is what I had hoped for.

Would you try another book written by Lauren Weisberger or narrated by Laurel Lefkow?

the narrator does her best with a limp storyline. You keep waiting for something to happen but not much does. More endless descriptions of clothing and interior design than action.

Would you ever listen to anything by Lauren Weisberger again?

    yes
