Publisher's summary

Hidden deep beneath Manhattan lies a warren of tunnels, sewers, and galleries, mostly forgotten by those who walk the streets above. There lies the ultimate secret of the Museum Beast.

When two grotesquely deformed skeletons are found deep in the mud off the Manhattan shoreline, museum curator Margo Green is called in to aid the investigation. Margo must once again team up with police lieutenant D'Agosta and FBI agent Pendergast, as well as the brilliant Dr. Frock, to try and solve the puzzle. The trail soon leads deep underground, where they will face the awakening of a slumbering nightmare.

Critic reviews

The netherworld of New York City...proves as shuddery a setting for the authors' latest scientific monster mash as the American Museum of Natural History did for their bestselling Relic, to which this is the sequel. ( Publishers Weekly)
"This should do for the New York subway system what Jaws did for Long Island beaches." ( Booklist)
"Dick Hill's reading of this fascinating sequel to Relic builds the suspense and horror." ( AudioFile)

Suspenseful, interesting

Kind of reminded me of Jurassic Park in structure/narrative. Great setting, like able characters, strong women. The narrator us pretty good although his lady voices aren't the best. There are some odd sound effects in the narration (echo chamber when characters voice inner thoughts) that is distracting but not horrible. Recommend.

Could not have loved this more.

Absolutely amazing job by the narrator and the book was incredible. Will be looking for more books narrated by him and will be reading book 3

As bad as I thought the last reader was…

Ok, the book is great. Or the story is. Dick Hill is my least favorite reader and he didn’t “disappoint” here. This is my second time listening to the entire Pendergast series, and is a wonderful collection of stories that will keep you enthralled for weeks, but the narration is hard to swallow. The only audio book I’ve ever not finished was a Dick Hill read story. Enough said. Scott Brick does the next book, and he’s one of my favorite readers, but I can’t recall how he does with the series. The readers changed often. The last (latest) books were outstanding in their portrayal of Pendergast. Just a heads up, go listen to Thunderhead (same authors, Brick reading) before heading on to the 3rd Pendergast novel. It’s not a Pendergast book, but there’s continuity of characters otherwise, and it’s a great story.

Really good book!

The overall story is really fascinating. Amazingly written, and every part of it keeps you on the edge. I loved every chapter of it and the narration performance is done so well!

What a treat

These two authors are a fan favorite for me with the topping on the cake being the narrator, Dick Hill!

A novel storyline

I’ve been a big fan of the Pendergast series, and have actually read most of them prior to this one. So here I am at book 2 of the series, even though I’ve completed most of the series. Having said that, the characters are consistent with the later productions (although they become more developed overtime as you would expect)And I enjoyed the originality of this story. I found the storyline to be very interesting. As always, there was plenty of action and suspense. I recommend it.

Talented reader

The reader’s ability to imbue the characters each with their own voice was excellent. A little weak on the female charactersperhaps. But outstanding in my opinion for the male characters.

Good story, bad reader

The story is a good one, an early preston, Child book ,but still good. The narrator done by Dick Hill is annoying. There are many mispronounced words and almost every character has a weasly Bronx accent. I like Preston/Child's later choice for the narrator Rene Auberjonois.
