Publisher's summary

Hidden deep beneath Manhattan lies a warren of tunnels, sewers, and galleries, mostly forgotten by those who walk the streets above. There lies the ultimate secret of the Museum Beast.

When two grotesquely deformed skeletons are found deep in the mud off the Manhattan shoreline, museum curator Margo Green is called in to aid the investigation. Margo must once again team up with police lieutenant D'Agosta and FBI agent Pendergast, as well as the brilliant Dr. Frock, to try and solve the puzzle. The trail soon leads deep underground, where they will face the awakening of a slumbering nightmare.

Prolong the suspense: listen to the first book, Relic.

Critic reviews

The netherworld of New York City...proves as shuddery a setting for the authors' latest scientific monster mash as the American Museum of Natural History did for their bestselling Relic, to which this is the sequel. ( Publishers Weekly)
"This should do for the New York subway system what Jaws did for Long Island beaches." ( Booklist)
"Dick Hill's reading of this fascinating sequel to Relic builds the suspense and horror." ( AudioFile)

Did not like narration

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I enjoyed the story. I don't think I'd listen to it again, however; it dragged on too long.

What didn’t you like about Dick Hill’s performance?

I didn't like the "sound effects" for lack of a better phrase. The "echo-y" sounds when a character was having a thought, or speaking through a PA system, etc. were annoying and unnecessary.

Was Reliquary worth the listening time?

Because I enjoy the Pendergast character, yes.

Great Job with book 2 in this series.

Reliquary also marks the second appearance of Agent Pendergast (Relic), a character most readers have elevated to the status of a modern Sherlock Holmes with a touch of James Bond thrown in. Hidden deep beneath Manhattan lies a warren of tunnels, sewers, and galleries, mostly forgotten by those who walk the streets above. There lies the ultimate secret of the Museum Beast. . Margo must once again team up with police lieutenant D'Agosta and FBI agent Pendergast, as well as the brilliant Dr. Frock, to try and solve the puzzle. The trail soon leads deep underground, where they will face the awakening of a slumbering nightmare. The narrator Dick Hill did a very good job.

Wordy but good story.

The first two Pendergast novels show Preston and Child finding his voice. This book gives us a better look at our favorite FBI agent and whets our appetite for more about who he is. We need Relic and Reliquary to set the stage for the rest of the series.

disappointed

I was a little disappointed that it ran so close to the first book and not enough action from the wrinkle people

Horrible effects, horrible narrator

This is a great story, but the narrator is horrible. His voice and the accents he uses gave me a headache. For some reason they added special effects to the reading, including echos. I couldn’t listen to the rest of the story because of this.

Terrific book/lousy narrator

Like all Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child books, it was interesting, very exciting & full of things to learn about.
Unfortunately, the narrator is terrible— screwing up accents, mispronouncing area names….
Read the book!!

Great story

Here are my only complaints with the narration. Two of the main characters sported a old movie gangster type accent... Drove me crazy. The production used an echo chamberlike soundbite for those short "thinking to oneself" moments. They were infrequent, usually only one or two sentences long and so invasive to the flow of listening! Anyway, other than that, the narrator was wonderful!.

Not there best book but interesting characters.

I love these two authors and this book delivers the beginning of Pendergast the FBI liaison. This is the second book so it would really help you to read the relic first. I hope you give these two authors a try
Because they are captivate
