Publisher's Summary

The new full-tilt, unstoppably hilarious and entertaining novel from the best-selling author of Skinny Dip and Bad Monkey.

When Lane Coolman's car is bashed from behind on the road to the Florida Keys, what appears to be an ordinary accident is anything but (this is Hiaasen!). Behind the wheel of the other car is Merry Mansfield - the eponymous Razor Girl - and the crash scam is only the beginning of events that spiral crazily out of control while unleashing some of the wildest characters Hiaasen has ever set loose. There's Trebeaux, the owner of Sedimental Journeys - a company that steals sand from one beach to restore erosion on another...Dominick "Big Noogie" Aeola, a NYC mafia capo with a taste for tropic wear...Buck Nance, a Wisconsin accordionist who has rebranded himself as the star of a redneck reality show called Bayou Brethren...A street psycho known as Blister who's more Buck Nance than Buck could ever be...Brock Richardson, a Miami product-liability lawyer who's getting dangerously - and deformingly - hooked on the very ED product he's litigating against...And Andrew Yancy - formerly Detective Yancy, busted down to the Key West roach patrol after accosting his then-lover's husband with a DustBuster. Yancy believes that if he can singlehandedly solve a high-profile murder, he'll get his detective badge back. That the Razor Girl may be the key to Yancy's future will be as surprising as anything else he encounters along the way - including the giant Gambian rats that are livening up his restaurant inspections.

What the Critics Say

"Rejoice, fans of American madness who've sought fulfillment in political reportage. South Florida's master farceur is back to reassure you that fiction is indeed stranger than truth.... [Hiaasen's] plotting is so fine-tuned that preposterous complications that would strain lesser novelists fit right into his antic world. Relax, enjoy, and marvel anew at the power of unbridled fictional invention." (Kirkus Reviews)

"[An] immensely entertaining wild ride.... Merry Mansfield, the Razor Girl, is sharp, that's for sure, and one of the coolest characters Hiaasen has ever brought to the page.... This is the ultimate beach read for anyone with a taste for Hiaasen's skewed view of a Florida slouching toward Armageddon." (Jane Murphy, Booklist)

"Breezy, enjoyable...fast-paced...readers will be hoping that Yancy and the other quirky denizens of Hiaasen's Florida will soon be back for another screwball adventure." (Publishers Weekly)

    "Best book this year!"

If you like Hiaasen or liked Bad Monkey - Stop reading reviews and just read the book. This is written for those with a dark sense of humor and a guilty pleasure for the news of the weird (or what we here in South Florida refer to as the 6:00 local news). Hiaasen hits it out of the ball park again with an insane bunch of characters, each equal parts loathsome and loveable. It was a delight to have Yancy, our hero from Bad Monkey, back. The star of the show though is Merry. The two of them - him trying to salvage his police career and her penchant for petty crime - would make a great series, but that’s wishful thinking. Like his other books, this isn't just a wild crime novel, it's a hidden editorial on popular culture and environmental stewardship or lack thereof. What I love about Hiaasen though is that I'm not gagging on an op-ed piece disguised as fiction but instead thoroughly loving a well-written, imaginative tale of crime and mayhem with some observations and history mixed in. What amazes me most is that even though he has a style and niche, Hiaasen always surprises.

Hiassen is back in top form. And it's embarrassing to walk down the street and burst out laughing, for no apparent reason.

    "Vintage Hiaasen"

Carl Hiaasen has done it again. Improbable characters made believable and uproariously funny. John Rubinstein is, as usual, the consummate narrator.

    "Still funny, not his best"

Still making you laugh (but I miss Skink), Hiaasen's latest book is a bit disjointed and a little too frenetic for easy enjoyment...at least, that's how it struck me. It may have been the narrator, who was so raucous in most of his characterizations that I began to dislike all the characters except Yancy. I may have to read the print version to get an accurate impression of the book itself; to me this indicates a mis-match of book and narrator. I have read or listened to all of Hiassen's books; I wouldn't put this book or its narrator in the top 3. Still, it's Hiaasen!

    "Fabulous Florida"

I have always enjoyed Carl Hiasson's novels and this one is a treasure, very contemporary and timely story with several entertaining plot lines as well as bringing in a few characters from his last work, "Bad Monkey".

A delightful and hilarious romp. The narrator was EXCELLENT. Was sad when it ended, and will look for other Hiaasen novels.

    "Hiaasen is back."

A rollicking ride amid the crazies of South Florida. This is certainly a match for some of his early works. I consumed it with binge listening.

If you like Hiaasen's usual cast of hyperbolic and quirky characters you will like his most recent offering. Enough said.

"Hiaasen never fails to lighten your mood"
If you could sum up Razor Girl in three words, what would they be?

    Classic Kooky Hiaasen

What did you like best about this story?

Great narrator, twisted humor and irony. Nice escape.

What does John Rubinstein bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Narrator is one of the best for sure. Captures the characters perfectly and gets Hiaasen.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

When a redneck reality TV star goes missing in the Florida Keys, it will take a food inspector and a wacky red-headed grifter to solve the case.

    Any additional comments?

I wish they would make movies out of Hiaasen's books. Addicted, I have read or listened to them all.
