Editorial reviews

Oath of Honor is the third book in the First Responders series by Radclyffe. Combining personal drama with political realism a la "The West Wing", this audiobook is the story of Captain Wes Masters, first physician to the fictional president of the United States, Andrew Powell. As if the high-stress job wasn't enough, social rivalries and romantic intrigues break out within the Presidential Protection Detail. This couldn't be good for the President's safety….

Betsy Zajko's expressive voice has a smooth, silk-like tone, allowing listeners to really digest each detail of the prose.

Publisher's summary

Navy Captain Wes Masters, newly posted to head the White House Medical Unit, is a physician with only one patient, but her job is twenty-four/seven. Her charge is simple - protect and preserve the well-being of the most powerful man in the world - the President of the United States. As the First Physician, Wes must travel by President Andrew Powell's side, in the hot zone, and with everything she needs to save his life, or in case he becomes injured or falls ill. Her job gets even harder when she has to prove she is up to the task to Secret Service Agent, Evyn Daniels, a member of the elite Presidential Protection Detail, and a woman who challenges Wes on more than just the professional front...

Evyn isn't happy about inserting Wes into PPD, especially since Evyn believes the post should have gone to her good friend, Dr. Peter Chang. The stakes soon get even higher for all involved, when Homeland Security's Deputy Director, Cameron Roberts, is brought in to investigate a possible security breach, and everyone, including Evyn, is a suspect.

Loved it

Would you listen to Oath of Honor again? Why?

Yes. I plan to when I get back to that section in the honor series now that I know it is a part of a series kind of.

What does Betsy Zajko bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I enjoyed her a lot she made the hot scenes very enjoyable. She had a good range in voices that made it nice to listen to .

Great story, great narrator

Would you listen to Oath of Honor again? Why?

I'd read or listen to any book by Radclyffe.

Have you listened to any of Betsy Zajko’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Don't know if I've listened to this narrator before, because their names don't usually stick with me. This one will, though, because she's great. A bad narrator can ruin a great book. Betsy Zajko is the best I've heard. The sound editor, however, could have done a better job in a place or two where it was easy to hear the splice in the edit. Or, maybe it was just obvious because the narrator was nearly flawless.

Any additional comments?

This is a "must listen" that should be on everybody's list who likes lesbian fiction.

Narrator was bad

This story was a good plot line and great overall addition to the series. The narrator ruined it for me. There was no clear distinction between the characters making West and Evan blur into one person . Radclyffe always has done an amazing job of capturing the dominate features of a strong female and I believe it was here in this story but NONE of it came out through the narrator.

loved the book but.......

the narrator made it hard for me, I sometimes could not which character was talking and became grateful for tells ... such as " wes said" or "Evan ". I am huge fan of the honor series and can't wait to finish it but had a hard time going from one the all time great narrators like Abby C. to this book. I just could not hear any difference when she was reading. it is too bad bc this would have been an easy 5 star.

Couldn't Finish This Book

I thought this book was a medical thriller mystery but it was a lesbian love story. Into chapter 10 I still didn't know what the story was about except lesbian sex and lust. A great disappointment is understated.

Thumbs up to the story, thumbs down to narrator

I'm a Radclyffe fan but have only listened to her books on Audible. I might've enjoyed this book more if I would've read it instead of listened to audio version. But I just did not connect with this one like I did others in Honor series (this one is major spinoff and segue into Honor book #8). I prefer Abby Craden as narrator for Radclyffe because she makes each character their own & gives an actual performance. That's especially true for Blair & Cam's character/ongoing love story.

I'm sorry but Betsy Zajko just doesn't do it for me as a narrator. She did not make me fall in love with Wes & Evan's story...& she did not do any justice to Blair & Cam in this book. I could never distinguish one character from another because Betsy doesn't even attempt to change her voice. There is little to no inflection, except when she's narrating a sex scene. But even then, her performances almost always cause laughter from me because it just sounds so over-performed & unbelievable. It cheapens the story in my opinion. And she makes it very difficult to follow along with the story in general. It's almost impossible for me to invest in the book and connect with it or the characters when I have trouble keeping up with who's supposedly speaking at any moment. When you're narrating a book with so many female characters, it would go a very very long way to give each of them at least a semi-unique voice. Sigh. I just did not like this one at all, sorry Radclyffe.

Bad narration

What did you like best about this story?

I liked that it continued outside of the other Honor books, That being said, Abby Craden should have narrated this since some characters where from the Honor Series. When you get the voices of Blair, Cam and all other characters for so many books, it's kinda hard to listen to a book with same characters with different voices, takes away a lot.

Have you listened to any of Betsy Zajko’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I haven't. I didn't like her narration. Didn't know which character was talking, nothing distinguishing in her voice to tell or any character's apart. I was looking forward to the Justice series coming to audible, but now that I know she will be narrating, not sure I'll but them. Abby Craden who did the Honor series........ FABULOUS!!!!!

Who was the most memorable character of Oath of Honor and why?

Evan

All for POTUS

Where does Oath of Honor rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It is great! I was on pins and needles regarding who was going to attack POTUS! I found this and every series of Honor to be the best written political thriller ever! The readers both Abby and Betsy are extraordinary. This writer is so focused on the back story, the front story and the true story of love, of war and of honor -- it is outstanding as all eight -- I recommend them and this one highly. Excellent writing and suspense!! Never knew so much went on in the White House -- as a military brat -- it is all true and very, very scary -- each president and their family has to go through all I have read -- it is awesome -- and sad -- what a person will do for their country.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Blair and Cam --- true love always wins! Also loved the chief of staff and Wes. And flirty Dianne!!!

Which character – as performed by Betsy Zajko – was your favorite?

Wes

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

YES!

Any additional comments?

More Radclyffe is an awesome writer and visionary for love no matter the gender and honor of country!

Monotone narration! :(

Only suffered through the book for the series. Otherwise the narration would have made me stop in the first chapter.
