Publisher's summary

Mr. Darcy's intimate diary tells us of his entanglements with women, his dangerous friendship with Byron, his daily life in Georgian London, his mercurial mood swings calmed only by fisticuffs at Jackson's - and his vain struggles to conquer his longing for Elizabeth Bennet.

For the first time we discover what really happened between his sister and the dastardly Wickham. How did he distract his friend Bingley from pining for his beloved Jane? Why did he propose to another young woman? Only to his diary does he tell his true story. At last we see Darcy as he really is; and, beneath his polite facade, we find a sensitive, private and passionate man.

The first variation that made me detest Darcy

This variation follows P&P but from “Darcy’s” perspective from his diary. It paints Darcy as a vain, self centered man who participates in multiple orgies, has sex with maids and prostitutes up until he is married. He lies to his best friend and causes undo pain and behaves in a cowardly manner and never does fully comes clean about the truth. He witnesses his friends rape a maid when he is 14 and still continues to honor their friendship and in fact maintained his friendship even knowing his friend impregnates and abandons multiple young women and attempted to fleece a grieving Bingley.
I would not recommend this book to anyone who cares about the characters. I wish I could scrub it from my mind.

No Way

This is written as if it was set in the 1930’s. Mr. Darcey calling his sister, ‘G’. He sounds so awful. Like that of the Gatsby era? Yuk way to pompous a Darcey doesn’t do the story well in my mind.

Takes the fun and turns it nasty

This is a dark twist on a favorite classic
There is a lot of sex and very little interaction with Elizabeth. The narrator is awesome but the story itself is dull and at times really nasty. The whole book gives women of the time an object feel rather than a breathless romance.

Aweful

I can’t say enough how disgusted I am with this depiction of mr. Darcy. It is opposite of his actual character and I do not enjoy reading it at all.

Mr Darcy's Diary

I neither liked the story nor enjoyed the narration. The characters and the dialogues are not as captivating as the original P&P. I have to admit that I have not yet been able to find a P&P follow-up that I liked. Therefore I do not read them anymore. But some of the reviews were so good with this one that I decided to give it a shot. But it wasn't any better.

Mr. Darcy not a gentleman?!

The writer is describing Mr. Darcy not in the same light as Jane Austen it's quite sad and disappointments ...in the story Mr. Darcy was witnessed a rape of the woman and just stood there and didn't do nothing ... I believe the Jane Austen wouldn't let Darcy character so much like Wickham :(

Rooting for Mr. Collins in this one!

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

In this book, Mr. Darcy is a rake of the worst sort. I have never been one that cares to read about Mr. Darcy in previous relationships, but if you can handle him dabbling with the Netherfield servants and seeking comfort with Lord Byron in London, you may be able to enjoy this one.

Has Mr Darcy's Diary turned you off from other books in this genre?

Absolutely not, I just know that I will read the Amazon reviews before buying an audiobook.

Which character – as performed by David Rintoul – was your favorite?

He did a decent Darcy, I just hated the writing.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Mr Darcy's Diary?

The scenes about Darcy sleeping with every available woman in sight. I just don't think that this book is redeemable.

Not Jane Austen's Characters

This is a decent book, but as part of Pride and Prejudice it is flop. The characters are simply NOT Jane Austen's characters. At least other books doing sequels etc. to Jane Austen, have fidelty to her characters and the period. This simply fails on all these accounts. If you want book which fills in the blanks of Pride and Prejudice - this is simply not that book.

Not for me

If you love the "purity" of the love in P&P then this is not or you. The story is interesting, but it was not at all my own vision of Mr. Darcy's "behind the scenes" involvement in the story.

That said, the narration was quite good...
