Publisher's summary

John Dies at the End is a genre-bending, humorous account of two college drop-outs inadvertently charged with saving their small town—and the world—from a host of supernatural and paranormal invasions.

Stop.

You should not have touched this flyer with your bare hands.

No, don’t put it down. It’s too late. They’re watching you.

My name is David Wong. My best friend is John. Those names are fake. You might want to change yours. You may not want to know about the things you’ll read on these pages, about the sauce, about Korrok, about the invasion, and the future. But it’s too late. You touched the book. You’re in the game. You’re under the eye.

The only defense is knowledge. You need to read this book, to the end. Even the part with the bratwurst. Why? You just have to trust me.

The important thing is this: the drug is called Soy Sauce, and it gives users a window into another dimension. John and I never had the chance to say no. You still do.

I’m sorry to have involved you in this, I really am. But as you read about these terrible events and the very dark epoch the world is about to enter as a result, it is crucial you keep one thing in mind: none of this was my fault.

Am I missing something?

I loved the idea of this book. I really wanted to like the book more. However, I am not sure it works in audible format. I would listen in my car and found myself always lost in the story. I would rewind and jump back a chapter just to re-listen to something I thought I missed. This is a story you have to be fully focused on to follow.

Best monsters ever!

If you enjoy Jay and Silent Bob type stories and have a high tolerance for gore, you will love this book. The author is so inventive. It is difficult to come up with scary monsters that haven't been done before, but David Wong is endlessly inventive (perhaps because the story is true and he didn't have to invent a thing). The wig monsters were my personal favorites. I laughed out loud multiple times. The voice the narrator does for the main character's sidekick is brilliant. He delivers each punchline perfectly. This would be a great listen for a surf trip to Baja.

ridiculous surreal bizarre and surprisingly deep

The style is completely ridiculous and over-the-top irreverent. But there are dozens of moments and quotes that are quite profound and subtle. Even though the style is absurdist and surreal, the plot is quite complex and intertwined, the characters are dynamic and subtle, and the themes are clever and purposeful.

Funny, tense, and original

This book was perfect for my job. I drive a Forklift for 12 hour shifts (yes, I had the volume low and one bud out, so I could still hear) it really helped passed the time, and the first thing I did after finishing this one was buy and download the next two.

*spoilers past this point, you've been warned*

I found the romance between Amy and David to be very cute, just as an aside point.

Better than the Movie

The movie was great and the book was just as good. It was a funny horror story with great characters. Can't wait to see what happens in the next book.
