Publisher's summary

John Dies at the End is a genre-bending, humorous account of two college drop-outs inadvertently charged with saving their small town—and the world—from a host of supernatural and paranormal invasions.

Stop.

You should not have touched this flyer with your bare hands.

No, don’t put it down. It’s too late. They’re watching you.

My name is David Wong. My best friend is John. Those names are fake. You might want to change yours. You may not want to know about the things you’ll read on these pages, about the sauce, about Korrok, about the invasion, and the future. But it’s too late. You touched the book. You’re in the game. You’re under the eye.

The only defense is knowledge. You need to read this book, to the end. Even the part with the bratwurst. Why? You just have to trust me.

The important thing is this: the drug is called Soy Sauce, and it gives users a window into another dimension. John and I never had the chance to say no. You still do.

I’m sorry to have involved you in this, I really am. But as you read about these terrible events and the very dark epoch the world is about to enter as a result, it is crucial you keep one thing in mind: none of this was my fault.

A Disgusting Trip Through Shit and Demon Blood

Would you listen to John Dies at the End again? Why?

I would listen to John Dies at the End—In fact, I plan to do that very soon, because it's one of those books that leaves delicate clues throughout the beginning, and then has the big reveal at the end, and therefore it's one of those books that'd be nice to read again, once we know the plot, so we can find all the little easter eggs.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked how imaginative this story was, how brutal the disgusting elements were, and how I could never fucking guess what was coming next. It was like what I imagine going on a roller coaster while tripping balls is like, crazy and terrifying but definitely something you're going to want to talk about afterwards, and maybe drag your friends into if they'll let you.

Which character – as performed by Stephen R. Thorne – was your favorite?

Dave, the narrator. We got up close and personal with his character, and so its hard not to like him. He's got a good heart, a probably-more-than-healthy amount of self loathing, and really valid reasons for the way he acts. There was never a second where I was listening to him where I was like "what the fuck is with this guy" because he was just so believable.

Who was the most memorable character of John Dies at the End and why?

I'd say the most memorable character, probably aside from Dave, was Molly. I don't know. Molly was great. Good dog. Weird dog. Really, really weird dog.

Any additional comments?

This is a good book to draw to, if you need to doodle or work on an art project. It's also probably good for long train rides, but I might gently caution you against listening to it as a before-sleep book if you're easily freaked out.

Peak comedy horror

No other author than Jason Pargin / David Wong walks with as much style the fine line between sci-fi, horror, wit, insight, and humor. A Kurt Vonnegut or Chuck Palahniuk for our time.
+ As usual, the book is SO much better than the film.

I loved everything

“You think the jellyfish ate her?”
“Bones and all?” (Said skeptically)
“We’re talking about a tentacled, flying lamp fucker Dave, what are you prepared to call ‘unlikely’?”

It was worth it for that one quote and there were so many other equally good ones. This book was a blast.

A wonderful book that is gory and gross to some

The book is well thought out. highly entertaining and well read. I don't even know where to begin to start on this one. Think Lovecraft meets Scooby Doo at an adult book store and they go hang with Bruce Willis in a haunted small town America.Your getting there. Funny, entertaining, suspenseful, and enjoyable from beginning to end.

It doesn’t ever end. Not really.

Imagine a young adult author writing a story, but after a 15 day alcohol and acid fueled bender. That’s exactly what you get here. No more. No less. It’s beautiful.

A convoluted, gruesome, & insanely funny story!

as the title says. definitely not for kids, a lot of dick jokes, but also a lot of other good laugh out loud humor. so it has something for everyone.

Dated, but funny

The story is original and mostly funny. There’s a lot of offensive language though. I wasn’t expecting the intensity or frequency of slurs

Amazing writing

I never read anything related to horror but the writing in this book is nauseatingly filled to the brim with liquid gold and its about to blow.
