Character of a Child

This is quite simply one of the most beautiful, heart rendering stories I have ever heard. Breaking down every barrier, looking deep into the human spirit, revealing the good in a boy who had every reason to be bitter, to be broken beyond repair, this historical tale brings the reader from the child's escape from a concentration camp through his journey through Europe. The genuine, forthright way that David deals with his environment, the people he meets, those who would harm him or help him is touching, amazing, thought provoking. That a child who had escaped from a lifetime in a concentration camp could have such compassion and reasoning of right and wrong, that he would choose to believe in "the God of the green pastures" . . . the God of the David in the Bible . . . well, it goes to show that words, even few words spoken to children with ears to hear are sometimes retained. Though the book is historical fiction, it is true to the times, and well could have happened. God bless those who lost family members in the concentration camps . . . God bless those who survived . . . and God help us all who let it happen.

A Little Gem

I remember reading this one for school a long time ago so thought I would revisit it with my 12 year old son and I can say we loved it. In fact, I would say it is one of the best books I have read, it is beautifully written and we found it quite gripping to listen to, but what I most enjoyed is the way it makes you think, both about the story of David's escape and travels, and the ideas in the book. I enjoyed it as a child, but I got so much more out of it as an adult.

Well worth a listen

I've loved this book since I had to read it in year 8 at school. The story is intriguing and the main character, David, grows and develops as the story unfolds. It was well read and flowed smoothly. I'd definitely recommend this one!
