Publisher's summary

They came by river and by wagon train, braving the endless distances of the Great Plains and the icy passes of the Sierra Nevada. They were men like Linus Rawlings, a restless survivor of Indian country who’d headed east to see the ocean but left his heart - and his home - in the West. They were women like Lilith Prescott, a smart, spirited beauty who fled her family and fell for a gambling man in the midst of a frontier gold boom. These pioneering men and women sowed the seeds of a nation with their courage - and with their blood. Here is the story of how their paths would meet amid the epic struggle against fierce enemies and nature’s cruelty, to win for all time the rich and untamed West.

I thought the movie was good!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

No wonder they made a movie out of this book! This book is outstanding! The fascinating lives of the family tree that begins out east and moves across the continent kept me hooked, wanting to keep listening to see how the story would unfold. I sat up late night at night skipping sleep to listen to the book, not wanting to stop but keep going. Great book, well written!!! Highly recommended!!!

Be CAREFUL! - Louis L'Amour is NOT the author

Apparently, L'Amour was tasked with either reading the screenplay, or watching the movie, in order to 'write' this book. James R. Webb wrote the screenplay, so, for me, he is the author.

I saw the movie as a kid, and liked it immensely, living in Tucson.

I have only listened to 3 other LL audiobooks, but it's CLEAR that the dialogue, characters and the story did NOT come from his wonderful mind. Oh, it does portray vignettes in history that give a sense of the winning of the West, the thread of time and families, but to me, much more shallow (gratingly so) on dialogue, much less depth of the characters.

Not the same.

My family and I love things about the west, so Louis L'Amour is one of our favorite authors and we have many of the audio books by him, this one just wasn't the same, it is kind of sad. It just isn't one of his best books.

Needs a new narrator

The book may be great. The narration is horrible! Reader moves two quick between characters. Hard to follow who is speaking.

Review of How the West Was Won

This Audible was very complex, too long, boring, boring, and I couldn’t wait for it to end so I could review it. For me, it was a waste of time.
