Publisher's summary

Pregnant and secretly married, Cheryl Anway scribbles what becomes her last will and testament on a school binder shortly before a rampaging trio of misfit classmates gun her down in a high school cafeteria. Overrun with paranoia, teenage angst, and religious zeal in the massacre's wake, this sleepy suburban neighborhood declares its saints, brands its demons, and moves on.

But, for a handful of people still reeling from that horrific day, life remains permanently derailed. Four dramatically different characters tell their stories: Cheryl, who calmly narrates her own death; Jason, the boy no one knew was her husband, still marooned ten years later by his loss; Heather, the woman trying to love the shattered Jason; and Jason's father, Reg, whose rigid religiosity has separated him from nearly everyone he loves.

"It's an extraordinarily well-written novel with characters you know you shouldn't be liking but do. So real." (Whoopi Goldberg)

Too depressing

Great character development and wonderful storytelling. A few times the author strayed away too much from the main story and started to be too opinionated, but it always made sense at the end. For me, the book is just too depressing.

Narration

The four narrators are exceptional. They turn a good book into a profound and
memorable one.

Starts strong, ends weak

This book is told by four characters. The first character, in addition to being my favorite audiobook narrator to date, had a very interesting story. Too bad they kill her off early on. The next three characters got, in my opinion, successively worse as the book went on. By the end I barely wanted to listen anymore, but I did finish the book, hoping for redeption - there wasn't any.

I don't understand why this book is rated highly.

What did I just hear?! 5% interesting story, 95% whining and loose plot. I feel like an Olympian after the hours of forcing myself to finish this book. Maybe I should have read it. The voice actors were of noticeably varying levels of skill and were either annoying or bad casts.
