Publisher's summary

Winner of the Bram Stoker Award for Best First Novel

From a master of horror comes an apocalyptic showdown between the residents of a secluded, rural town and the deadly evil that confronts them wherever they turn.

Evil doesn’t die.

The cozy little town of Pine Deep buried the horrors of its past a long time ago. Thirty years have gone by since the darkness descended and the Black Harvest began, a time when a serial killer sheared a bloody swath through the quiet Pennsylvania village. The evil that once coursed through Pine Deep has been replaced by cheerful tourists getting ready to enjoy the country’s largest Halloween celebration in what is now called “The Spookiest Town in America.”

It just grows stronger.

But then—a month before Halloween—it begins. Unspeakably desecrated bodies. Inexplicable insanity. An ancient evil walks the streets, drawing in those who would fall to their own demons and seeking to shred the very soul of this rapidly fracturing community. Yes, the residents of Pine Deep have drawn together and faced a killer before. But this time, evil has many faces—and the lust and will to rule the earth. This struggle will be epic.

Keep chilled: listen to more in the Pine Deep trilogy.

Critic reviews

“Maberry supplies plenty of chills, both earthbound and otherworldly, in this atmospheric horror novel…This is horror on a grand scale, reminiscent of Stephen King’s heftier works.” ( Publishers Weekly)

cussy cusserson

okay, I am not often offended by cursing and it's not like I don't understand that some times cursing just comes out with reason. but Mayberry filled the book with expletives with no good reason. it actually took away from the book. I work in a factory and everyone I work with curses like sailors and this book had me to the point where I had to listen in segments to get through it. the story line was good, if it had less I would have really liked it.

Huh..?

I’m over 9hrs in and I’m still waiting for something to happen. Not what I thought. It’s a lot of human criminals and a couple scitzo dudes who hear voices. I was ready to binge the whole trilogy but this is not a vampire/ monster/ paranormal. A guy came back to life. Horribly disappointed in this. I wasted 2work days excited by all the reviews and ready to go on an epic adventure. I’m going to cut my losses now and find something else. You can give it a try cause it’s free but after 9hrs nothing more than a long long long disappointment.

Good story!

It starts out slow, really slow, a lot of setup is required, but by the end, you’re left wanting more. Which is good because there are sequels.

Very Entertaining Horror

I am a Maberry fan based on his Joe Ledger series. This is the first horror book of his I have listened to. I generally don’t like horror but this book has a great story line and fantastic characters. The town of Pine Deep and people you meet are very interesting. Maberry is a fantastic writer and his descriptions of characters and events along with the mood he creates makes it all work. I am going to listen to the next book.

More of a teen horror book.

Warning! I did not finish the book, so take my assessment with a grain of salt.
This book felt like more of a teen horror book then anything else. Like, if it were a t.v. shown, it would find its home on the CW network. Alot of plot points seemed very on the nose or just played out. For instance, one of the main bad guys is named "Ruger" and the good guy is a somewhat rough neck, townie with a heart of gold. After 5 chapters, I decided this book wasn't for me and ffwd through it so it would stop showing up when I opened the audible app.
