Publisher's summary

Winner of the Bram Stoker Award for Best First Novel

From a master of horror comes an apocalyptic showdown between the residents of a secluded, rural town and the deadly evil that confronts them wherever they turn.

Evil doesn’t die.

The cozy little town of Pine Deep buried the horrors of its past a long time ago. Thirty years have gone by since the darkness descended and the Black Harvest began, a time when a serial killer sheared a bloody swath through the quiet Pennsylvania village. The evil that once coursed through Pine Deep has been replaced by cheerful tourists getting ready to enjoy the country’s largest Halloween celebration in what is now called “The Spookiest Town in America.”

It just grows stronger.

But then—a month before Halloween—it begins. Unspeakably desecrated bodies. Inexplicable insanity. An ancient evil walks the streets, drawing in those who would fall to their own demons and seeking to shred the very soul of this rapidly fracturing community. Yes, the residents of Pine Deep have drawn together and faced a killer before. But this time, evil has many faces—and the lust and will to rule the earth. This struggle will be epic.

Keep chilled: listen to more in the Pine Deep trilogy.

Critic reviews

“Maberry supplies plenty of chills, both earthbound and otherworldly, in this atmospheric horror novel…This is horror on a grand scale, reminiscent of Stephen King’s heftier works.” ( Publishers Weekly)

If you like Stephen King you'll love this book

Great story and engaging characters. It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a book this much. Immediately purchased the next 2 in the series.

Great start to a trilogy

I really enjoyed this book. The narration was great and I instantly was able to get into this book. Be aware however if you get this book, it is the first book of a trilogy and ends on a cliffhanger. So be prepared to get all three books it is well worth it in my opinion.

Stay withStay with It for the first hour or so

Interesting twisting story -not really what I expected and a bit confusing at times, enough so that I needed to back track to know for sure which characters were involved in the scene.
Having said that-once I became familiar with the author’s style it was easier to follow.
I enjoyed it and will be looking up the next in the series. There seems to be much more to this story.

Narration is exceptional. The twist and turns are good. There are so many caricatures that come to life and keep you interested in the outcome of each one.

Took a strange turn

Average cop story turns into something crazy. This is clearly part of a series, but it should have gone weird earlier or not at all. Makes the listener wonder if the ghost road is even worth traveling. Not a terrible waste of time or money. No regrets.

Pretty good scary story.

Not quit on par with other Mayberry novels, but worth the time. I strongly recommend the written version over the audio, due to the fact that the narration is extraordinarily monotone. It was very helpful falling asleep last night, listening to the drone of the narrators voice.

I’m into the 6th chapter.. not sure what this is about.. yes a town that likes Halloween..
Not Mayberry’s best.. patchy and disjointed.
