Fluke: Or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings

Just why do humpback whales sing? That's the question that has marine behavioral biologist Nate Quinn and his crew poking, charting, recording, and photographing very big, wet, gray marine mammals - until the extraordinary day when a whale lifts its tail into the air to display a cryptic message spelled out in foot-high letters: Bite Me.

Publisher's Summary

Just why do humpback whales sing? That's the question that has marine behavioral biologist Nate Quinn and his crew poking, charting, recording, and photographing very big, wet, gray marine mammals - until the extraordinary day when a whale lifts its tail into the air to display a cryptic message spelled out in foot-high letters: Bite Me.

Trouble is, Nate's beginning to wonder if he hasn't spent just a little too much time in the sun. 'Cause no one else on his team saw a thing - not his longtime partner, Clay Demodocus; not their saucy young research assistant; not even the spliff-puffing white-boy Rastaman Kona (aka Preston Applebaum). But later, when a roll of film returns from the lab missing the crucial tail shot - and his research facility is trashed - Nate realizes something very fishy indeed is going on.

By turns witty, irreverent, fascinating, puzzling, and surprising, Fluke is Christopher Moore at his outrageous best.

"This amusing pastiche cobbles together elements from all the classic sea yarns: from Jonah and the Whale to Moby Dick to 20,000 Leagues under the Sea." (Booklist)

    "An all time favorite!"

This was one of the most creative and funny books I've ever read. I did read it, then bought the audio, and have listened a couple of times now enjoying it just as much. The narrator did a great job with the characters (Kona slides in and out of a faux surfer/Hawaiian/Jamaican accent as the author intended). The plot is inventive with good character development and settings that I, personally, would love to see in a movie. Beware of reading it in public - you will laugh out loud, people may stare. Some suggest Moore's humor is crude, but this one is generally milder. My advice is to read/listen to the intro to Fool and "take heed"...if you think you might be tempted to turn your nose up at such vulgar tripe, run away, don't look back, and don't complain later. Otherwise, enjoy, Moore is in a class of his own.

    "Great!"

I have read 4 of Moore's books, and have enjoyed them all. This was the first one that I have listened to, and it was even better than reading them.

    "Laughed outloud."

It has been a very long time since a book made me laugh outloud. This one accomplished that and more. Great humor.

    "Fun"

I was looking to laugh out loud. I loved "Fool" so I got this one. I was surprised that it wasn't a laugh a minute like Fool. Still, it held my interest and I enjoyed it!

    "Excellent"

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was fun! The reader was excellent and the story line humorous as well as intriguing. By coincidence there was story on the front page of the newspaper today--a stringy goo-substance was discovered floating for miles in the Chukchi Sea. Scientists state it is organic and not from an oil spill. I wonder what the results will be if the whales feeding up here encounter it...... Also enjoyed the author's notes at the end of the book.

"This is why I listen to audio books"

After listening to "Fluke" the first time, I sent a note to Bill Irwin, thanking him for such an entertaining experience. His interpretation of these characters--laid-back Nate and Clay, Clair, the Old Broad, Kona--fleshed out Moore's book in hilarious and unexpected ways. His performance was, in my opinion, pitch perfect.

My favorites? Kona's reaction to the news that the Chinese eat kitties; the Old Broad's insistence that the big whale wanted a pastrami sandwich. Moore's work is why I read and Irwin's narration is exactly why I listen to audio books.

    "Good but not the best"

This audiobook was very enjoyable but not quite as good, or as funny, as some of his other works. It's OK......not great.

    "Loved the narrator"

I swear, I want to hang out with the Iry surfer from upstate New York. The narrator did such a great job of narrating this, it stayed incredibly entertaining instead of just ridiculously stupid. It was funny as hell, an easy read, and generally entertaining.

    "Moore Genius"

A great piece. The humor is well derived and fluent. Moore's style is a combination of Richard Dawkins and the late Douglas Adams. In the age of DVDs his ability to tell a story is unsurpassed.
