Publisher's summary

After 13-year-old Charlie Hall’s mother dies and his father retreats into the silence of grief, Charlie finds himself drifting lost and alone through the brutal halls of junior high school.

But Charlie Hall is not entirely friendless. In the woods behind his house, Charlie is saved from a mountain lion by a grizzly bear, a species thought to be extinct in northern Idaho.

And this very unusual bear will change Charlie’s life forever. Deeply moving, and interwoven with hope and joy, Emory’s Gift is not only a heartwarming and charming coming-of-age story, but also a page-turning, insightful look at how faith, trust, and unconditional love can heal a broken family and can bridge the gaps that divide us.

What a GIFT of a story

What did you love best about Emory's Gift?

I think it would be the message of God's love and the inclusion of spirituality and humanity throughout the story.

What did you like best about this story?

See above

Have you listened to any of W. Bruce Cameron’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the first of his actually narrating his own story, and I really enjoyed it. I will have no problem listening to him again. I love it when an author is able to narrate their own book and do it well.

Who was the most memorable character of Emory's Gift and why?

Emory, of course

Any additional comments?

This was a great story. In the beginning, I was trying to follow the story line about who Emory the Bear was, but it picked up quickly and I was able to follow and enjoy it through the story.

Restored so much for me. ❤🐾

I have no idea where to start. I have listened to chapters of this over and over to make sure I don't miss one word.
this book has restored my belief in myself as and animal lover and the amazing connection i have with them. This book has as also reminded me of how strong my faith is and I am stronger in my faith.

I have Chapter 1 playing again as I write this review.

W. Bruce Cameron is my favorite author and his books have true meaning in my life. I, also, love him being the narrator.

Thank you.

I love Bruce Cameron's books

What did you love best about Emory's Gift?

It was so enjoyable. Such a cute story, it was fun listening. It took me away on Charlies' adventure. I always hate it when Bruce's books come to an end.. I feel like a made a friend and I won't be with them again. The other thing I liked is the real feelings Charlie describes of being a pre-teenger and losing his mother - it's an inside peek of the truth that pulls the covers back and I love that -- it makes the character more reliable and enduring.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Charlie Hall, of course!

What does W. Bruce Cameron bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He's inflection in his voice as he plays the different characters, but especially Charlie's voice. It makes you love Charlie even more.

If you could rename Emory's Gift, what would you call it?

The growing up of Charlie Hall - insights from a regular boy and his un-regular bear.

Any additional comments?

Please keep writing Bruce!!

My Favorite Novel by W. Bruce Cameron

I almost did not purchase this book because it was not part of the Dog's series. I am so glad I did. I enjoyed this book more than all of Cameron' novels. It was so sweet.

More than a "feel good"

I read this book because of the description about a boy and a bear. It is also about grief, family, coming of age, and much more. I was rather sorry when it ended but I had a smile on my face when it did. One story on the surface, there is much to continue thinking about especially as my sons grew up with the father that had died when they were teens. For those who love stories about animals and pets, I think this author will be appealing. However, I suspect he has the gift of knowing how animals reveal ourselves to ourselves.
