Eloise | [Judy Finnigan]

Eloise

Yesterday I almost saw her. I was standing on the sun deck, looking out to sea, revelling in the unexpected warmth of the February sun. A butterfly trembled on a nearby buddleia and suddenly I smelled her perfume. She wasn't there, of course. How could she be when I had seen her lying in her coffin just two weeks ago, the day before she was buried, her casket surrounded by the scented candles she loved? She lay in Cornish ground now....

Compulsively readable and incredibly haunting, this is the debut novel from broadcaster, journalist and Book Club champion, Judy Finnigan.

    "Enjoyable"

When I began reading this book, I thought it was about the conflict between the rational and intuitive aspects of the mind, in the guise of a ghost story. But, I wasn't exactly right. It isn't a love story either, for the lovers barely spend any time with each other, though they are both fascinating characters. It isn't a story of family life, domestic conflict and its resolution either. But all these elements blend well and the story moves along at a fast clip. The beautiful coastal village where the story is set, is lovingly described. The narration is excellent. I loved the fact that this is a happy story. Trouble hovers like gathering storm clouds, but the storm is exciting and enjoyable in its own way. Unlike 'The Thirteenth Tale', this is not a dark and gloomy tale. If I have any complaint, it is that the behavior of Cathy's husband is unrealistic. It is difficult to believe that he is not concerned about the children's safety at the end. Also, he does not deal with his disagreement with his wife like a man who has enjoyed a long, stable and happy marriage. His approach to protecting his wife's peace of mind isn't convincing either. But, l had a good time listening to this book and would strongly recommend it to others.

    "disappointing"

It started really well. It had the potential to be completely gripping. However, the dynamics between the characters did not ring true. I was increasingly frustrated, seeing the ending coming but hoping against hope it would not be so.

The supernatural element did not ring true either. No self respecting ghost, taking the trouble to stick around that much, would be that criptic. It sent me up the wall.

On the plus side, it was superbly written by a woman who, I wuld say, is no stranger to heartbreak and emotional harship. That analysis was superb. Reader too.

I loved listening to this book as it really tugged at the friendship heart strings. The nods to depression and coping with it are dealt with well within the book. It has a great believeable storyline for a first novel, well done Judy!

    "Loved it"

This the 1st book written by Judy Finnican, after hearing an interview on the radio I thought I would give it a listen. The book is engaging right from the beginning. It is well written and I could relate to the main character very quickly. The book is set in Cornwall, a place I have never been but the description of the area really made me want to visit soon.

Well done Judy really enjoyed your 1st book, can't wait for the next.

    "A LAZY SUNDAY AFTERNOON READ"

I wondered if Judy had what it takes to write a best seller, but yes i think she may have. I enjoyed 'Eloise', this haunted Cornish story, will it keep you wondering till the end or perhaps not. A nice story line, easy reading for a cold snowy day. Looking forward to book No. 2.

I wanted to give this book the benefit of the doubt, but the writing felt too obvious. I was bored.

    Story
"Strangely compelling after a slow start"
Would you try another book written by Judy Finnigan or narrated by Anna Bentinck?

I would probably try another Judy Finnigan book, as I loved the setting and found the narrator (Anna Bentinck) easy to listen to.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I think that possibly the story could have been condensed into fewer chapters - and would have liked more of a 'page-turner' ending to each.

Which character – as performed by Anna Bentinck – was your favourite?

I didn't have a favourite character, as I felt that they all contributed equally to the importance of the story - but if I had to choose which one Anna Bentinck helped me to identify with, it would be Eloise herself..ethereal and emotively portrayed.

    No, just this author.

How could the performance have been better?

    Narration was squeaky.
