Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling author Diana Gabaldon enchanted scores of fans with Outlander, her electrifying historical saga set in 18th-century Scotland. Now the sequel sweeps listeners back into the past as Claire relates more of her perilous sojourn there with her Scottish warrior husband, James Fraser. Twenty years after her strange journey back in time, Claire has returned to Scotland with her daughter, determined to share with her the secret she has harbored since her time travel. Still longing to know the fate of her beloved warrior, she recounts the story of her stay with him in the intrigue-ridden court of Charles Stuart and their attempt to avert the doomed Highlands uprising at Culloden. As her story unfolds, it reveals implications more far-reaching than even Claire could have guessed.

Narrator Davina Porter's gift for expression captures the history and flavor of a harsh place and time, and gives it the polish of a warm and engaging love story.

Another winner!

This book was such a great continuation of the Outlander series. It takes you on adventures that reveal the future of Claire and the past experience of how she got there. The last section had me crying like a baby, my heart aching, and by the end of this book I couldn’t wait to grab for the next in the series. Can’t get enough of these!

This is amazing!!

This is by far the best series I’ve ever read. Although I’m not particularly interested in Scottish history, I found myself so immersed into the story that I was unable to put it down. I’ve lost many weeks of sleep because of this and the first book in the series, and plan to lose a few more with Voyager!

gripping, and sometimes frustrating

long, but mostly what made it hard was not knowing what the gaelic/french words were spelled like. you hey so involved with the characters that certain parts legitimately stressed me out, and broke me heart. phenomenal book, definitely recommend.

Never disappoints

What made the experience of listening to Dragonfly in Amber the most enjoyable?

The author's interweaving of history with fiction and the continuation of the lives of Clare and Jamie along with a fabulous narrator made this listen a pleasure!

What did you like best about this story?

The intrigue of the royal court and the involvement of Ramon was entertaining.

Which scene was your favorite?

I enjoyed the scene where Clare is followed by a small, French admirer into a secluded alcove outside the ballroom at Versailles. As Clare attempts to keep this imp from kissing her toes, Jamie walks in. This scene made me laugh out loud.

If you could take any character from Dragonfly in Amber out to dinner, who would it be and why?

With so many interesting characters, one is not enough.

The saga continues

Claire and Jaime leave Crainsmur and head to Lallybroch. Life is peaceful for a while until Jaime is betrayed to the Watch by one of his tenants. He is jailed in Wentworth prison due to hang for a murder Jack Randall committed.

A dramatic rescue and off to France in hopes to threat Charles Stewart's plans to regain the throne.

The book is written from Claire's POV unlike the TV series, but all the passion and vivid descriptions bring the images to mind. Questions remain at the end:Did Jaime survive? What of Jack Randall?

Diana Gabaldon is a master. Davina Porter, not so much.

Diana Gabaldon is a master at writing and creating a vivid world for the imagination. Her character development is perfect and her timelines in a story about time traveling are intriguing and so very well done.
Davina Porter, however, tends to take me out of the story more often than not. Her voice is pleasant enough, but her accents are between wonderful and just plain embarrassing... especially her attempt at an American accent. She vacillates between British and barely American within the same sentence causing confusion as to which character is speaking at the moment. Her pronunciation of certain words is grating as well as her inconsistency of how she chooses to pronounce them.
I'm not sure why she was chosen to narrate a book through the main character's POV when the main character is a 27 year old woman, and Ms. Porter sounds much more mature than that. In other words, she sounds like an older woman telling a story of her youth over a cup of tea.
All said and done, I am able to listen past all the negatives in order to enjoy a beautiful series of books!

I can't get enough of Outlander or Jamie Fraser!

I can't get enough of Outlander or Jamie Fraser! I absolutely love this series and I dread when the final day comes and the story is over. The thought of it all ending makes me want to cry. Thank the Lord for Diana Gabaldon!!!
