Publisher's summary

A German Shepherd police dog witnesses a murder and if his owner - an Iraq war vet and former cop-turned-thief - is convicted of the crime, the dog could be put down.

Few rival Andy Carpenter's affection for dogs, and he decides to represent the poor canine. As Andy struggles to convince a judge that this dog should be set free, he discovers that the dog and his owner have become involved unwittingly in a case of much greater proportions than the one they've been charged with.

Andy will have to call upon the unique abilities of this ex-police dog to help solve the crime and prevent a catastrophic event from taking place.

David Rosenfelt, a native of Peterson, New Jersey, is a graduate of NYU. He was the former marketing president for Tri-Star Pictures before becoming a writer of novels and screenplays.

Wanna have some fun?

The Book: You don't read one of Rosenfelt's Andy Carpenter novels hoping for some profound insight. They likely will never win some hoity-toity award. You should read them because they are just plain entertaining. Some have excellent plots (like this one) others not so excellent... but they all are just a fine way to spend a few hours laughing and they are never ever boring. Wanna spend about eight hours doing something fun? Just for you? Buy and listen. A-

The Reader: Ahhh Grover. There is just no better voice to read Carpenter. Rosenfelt changes tenses about every six minutes, and Grover keeps up. Yeah... Grover suffers doing some characterizations... but who cares? HA! Wait 'til you hear him do Larry king. It's a hoot! In some books this would be important and even ruin the whole book. Here no. He so captures the tone and goofiness that is the Carpenter crowd... I pray he will be around forever. A.

Tail-wagging good!

I downloaded this audiobook because, like the protagonist, I'm a "dog lunatic," but in addition to the canine appeal, I also found an engaging story and a main character with a surprisingly sympathetic, yet amusingly wise-ass personality. Could anyone else pull off, with a straight face, a client meeting with a German Shepard? I'm going to start from the first in the series now that I've found this author. In addition, the reader has a great voice that seems well matched to the story. Definitely two paws up!

Another Great Listen in the Andy Carpenter Series

David Rosenfelt's series of books about lawyer Andy Carpenter are wonderful, and each new book is just a delight to listen to. This one was engaging, fun, suspenseful and immensely entertaining, full of colorful characters. Pick up this series at the beginning (Open and Shut) and if you enjoy that one as much as I did, you will want to read the books in order and will eagerly anticipate the next one as I do.

Pleasant surprise

This was my first David Rosenfelt book and I came upon it by chance thinking it was going to be a light, dog-oriented, cozy. What a wonderful surprise to discover such amusing characters and a much more involved, convoluted plot than expected. The further I went the more I was drawn into the book! Great tale and Grover Gardner is the perfect voice for these stories. You can be sure Rosenfelt is now on my favorite author's list.

Love These Stories!

As usual, Andy Carpenter 'a journeys through the legal system are filled with humor and suspense. .All the usual characters are here, and we have gotten to know them as friends as we have progressed through the books in the series.. Listening to this story was more difficult than othera because there were so many characters , it was hard to keep track of who was who. In the end, hiwever, it was another good Andy Carpenter mystery solved. Can't wait for the next!

Tries to be too much

DR follows a strict formula with the Carpenter series, at least to the end of the trial. It works well but is formulaic and predictable. When he connects his case to something bigger, as both a mystery and a thriller, things get too contrived, confusing and unlikely. This book is his best yet at doing all those things but still he doesn’t quite pull off the impossible. Even if clever and funny, a single book shouldn’t have so many terrible events, convenient coincidences and loose ends in a short timeline.
