With worldwide sales of over 56 million of her novels, Victoria Holt is one of the most popular romantic suspense novelists of all time. Anyone who enjoyed her novel, The Shadow of the Lynx, will be eager to devour another of her unforgettable tales.
Enamored by the handsome and arrogant Charles-Auguste, a wealthy French aristocrat, 18-year-old Minella is drawn into a complicated world of danger, betrayal, and murder. Denying her own suspicion that he has murdered his wife, she struggles with her fascination for the seductive and mysterious count. Against the backdrop of the incipient French Revolution, Minella’s life becomes a series of adventures that all lead to an exciting and unexpected climax. Davina Porter’s passionate narration transports readers back to a time when romance was a prerequisite to sex and family. Reminiscent of Charles Dickens’ Tale of Two Cities, the historic setting and the powerful heroine captivate any reader who enjoys a book that is impossible to put down.

I like novels set in the period of the French Revolution.
Davina Porter can be a prim English schoolmistress and a dissolute French count with equal persuasiveness.
Maybe because the story is told exclusively from the point of view of the main female character, the Count is a remote figure who never came to life for me, especially since he is away through much of the book. However, that turned out to be fine, because the relationships between the various female characters was much more compelling and complicated than the love story was, and I ended up enjoying that aspect the most.
I downloaded this book because it was written by Jean Plaidy and read by Davina Porter. I have read something near 15 of Plaidy's books about Queens and listened to as many or more books narrated by Davina Porter, so I had high expectations for this one. The narrator is excellent, as expected, but the story was nothing like those I am used to under the pen name of Jean Plaidy. This was 20% history, 20% misc. story, 60% sappy romance...not the balance I am looking for, but if you like historical romances you might be quite satisfied.
So many books, so little time!
Engaging, exciting, interesting
The historical background is well researched and accurate, and the story is allowed the time to develop. It's eventful and the mystery is very well done.
Not so far, but I'm definitely going to be listening to her again.
No extreme reaction; it's just an engrossing listen.
Holt's gothics are very heroine-centric which might not suit everyone, as it means the hero is often on the periphery, and they spend quite a large amount of time apart. I love the way Holt takes the time to build her story gradually; it's about the heroine's journey from start to finish.
The performance was excellent. Ms Porter was especially good with the female voices and managed the multiple French accents with aplomb. I felt her male characters were less successful, however and were harder to tell apart when there was more than one man in any particular scene.
Overall though, it held my interest completely from start to finish.
Loved it, not for kissing and gooey love stories - but rather for Ms Holt's ability to keep one interested. Not for everyone's tastes, perhaps. But, for a lover of literature and a stylistic approach, bravo, Ms Holt.
It's hard to say exactly where I rate Devel on Horseback. I can tell you it's definitely in I'd listen to it again and again.
Davina Porter is one of the best narators around. She really gives the characters their voice. I love her performances.
I read Devil on Horseback years ago when it first came out. It was a happy surprise to see it out in audio format especially performed by Davina Porter. This is a romance you can recommend to anyone without fear. Good story but not at all offensive. I recommend it to everyone.
