Welcome to Desperation.
Once a thriving copper-mining town in the middle of the Nevada desert, Desperation is now eerily abandoned. It's the last place that travellers like the Carver family, bound for vacation, and writer Johnny Marinville, astride his Harley, would expect to be stopped and charged. But Desperation still has a local cop - a unique regulator who patrols the wilderness highway.
The secrets buried in Desperation are as terrifying as the forces summoned to encounter them. A terrifying transformation is taking place, and the travellers will soon discover the true meaning of desperation....

Great Stephen King novel. Sometimes predictable but enough suspense and twists to keep you listening. I've been a King fan since I picked up my first, and this did not disappoint. Really enjoyed listening to it narrated by the author himself as it seems to add another aspect to the book. You really get the impression that the author has enjoyed reading his work as much as writing it.
intriguing story of an epic struggle between good and evil..... the familiar foundation of many a good yarn. Very enjoyable listen.
"Enjoyable Stephen King Romp"
I would recommend this book as the story has a good pace and well developed characters and is helped by the fact that King narrates himself.
The characters were nicely developed as the story unfolded.
This was a good performance by King and underlines why many books would benefit from author narration.
I wasn't moved but had a big smile on my face when the 12 year old David Carver feeds his comrades with fish and crackers in a nod to the feeding of the 5,000, Matthew 14: 13-21.
I enjoyed this book so much I will listen to more Stephen King.
"Desperation kept me awake"
Stephen King reading his own composition, can this work...... Hell yes it works.... gripping and enthralling.
"Stephen King should stick to writing"
I was really looking forward to this book after reading the description but unfortunately Stephen King narrating just does not work. His monotone voice doesn't change for any of the characters and I had to speed his voice up. Something I've never done before. Not a bad story but too much religious content for my liking.
"Stephen King at his best"
This is my favourite type of King story. Supernatural elements forming the basis for an evolving mystery but also a character drama where relationships shift and change under pressure!
"Just a gentle road trip!!?"
What a fantastic tale. The interwoven spiritual theme intertwined with the violence that unfolds is absolutely brilliant. It makes you shudder but unable to resist the next passage.
"Good book, narration really isn't up to par"
Love the book, and it holds your attention, but really not good narration. Too many breaths, paused, not great.
"What happened Mr. King?"
First: he should not read his own books. There are professionals with better acting skills. He totally ruined it. Stick to what you do better.
Second: hire a better ghost writer. I cannot believe that this book has been written by the same author of "It".
The dialogues are simply atrocious. The plot is a mess.
"Simply Outstanding! "
A superb piece of literature. A thrilling story teller for sure...a combination of pace, fear and even laughter. I fully recommend this work of art.
"Solid King Storytelling"
If you're a King fan, this will fill a slot in the audio bibliography, especially if you enjoy the author's narration, which I happen to.
For me, this book lies alongside similar lines as Tommyknockers and Dreamcatcher - that sci- fi edge has it here. Good story, but not his best ( though I wish I had half the talent to write one of King's less than best novels!).
An enjoyable journey.
