Publisher's summary

Code Name Verity is a compelling, emotionally rich story with universal themes of friendship and loyalty, heroism and bravery. Two young women from totally different backgrounds are thrown together during World War II: one a working-class girl from Manchester, the other a Scottish aristocrat, one a pilot, the other a wireless operator. Yet whenever their paths cross, they complement each other perfectly and before long become devoted friends. But then a vital mission goes wrong, and one of the friends has to bail out of a faulty plane over France. She is captured by the Gestapo and becomes a prisoner of war. The story begins in Verity's own words, as she writes her account for her captors.

Editor's Pick

Cue the ugly crying
"Fellow editor Emily recommended this one to me, and for that I will always be mad at her/eternally grateful. This is a gorgeous story of friendship during WWII that absolutely cracked my heart open—at one point I was crying so hard I had to pull over on the side of the ride. But please don’t let that deter you—it’s absolutely worth it."—Katie O., Audible Editor

Pleasantly surprised!

I really enjoyed this one: capable female protagonists, captivating epistolary story, and no sex scenes, I was surprised to hear it described as YA in one review, since it includes sadism and torture. An homage to friendship and sacrifice. Well done!

I love when an author makes me care.

The story was just a little slow for me at first but it made up for it as the book progressed. I don't know if it was just my mood, so others may not have the problem I did. It really clicked for me when I realized the character was writing about herself in the third person. It says that right in the summary...sigh.
The performances by the narrators were outstanding. I became immersed in the characters...I could believe it was our heroines speaking.
I love the way that all the seemingly trivial details of the story mesh together to make a satisfying conclusion to the story. Well done.

Good WWII novel

I purchased this book at a discount. I like WWII novels, so for a few bucks, why not take the plunge.

The book is well written and a good listen. It's sad, but it is also realistically told. The story has a plot device and it can be jolting. The book is told in first person, but then changes persons during the book.

I believe the story could have stood on it's own written in 3rd person so I'm not sure why it was written this way. But if you know about it up front, I think it makes the story easier to digest.

If you like WWII spy novels, then this is a book for you. You should give it a try. The performance is great and the story is well presented and fairly plausible (slightly contrived thus the reduction of 1 star).

It's worth the credit in my opinion.

Vivid tale of friendship and women's roles in WWII

What about Morven Christie and Lucy Gaskell ’s performance did you like?

The voices and reading suited the characters well. It was like listening to the characters telling the story rather than someone reading the story to me. The accents were appropriate without being distracting or difficult to understand.

Loved it!

I spent more time crying while listening to this book. Just thinking this is written as a young adult book, I would not have been able to handle the details of the war and tortuous think we did to each other, as a teenager. But I loved the story and how it all dovetailed together beautifully.

SPECTACULAR!!!

Genuinely unlike any book I've read before. Details so carefully and intricately woven throughout, my mind is still reeling from the whiplash inducing twists. And the narrators brought the whole experience to a new level! 10/10!!!
