Publisher's summary

Code Name Verity is a compelling, emotionally rich story with universal themes of friendship and loyalty, heroism and bravery. Two young women from totally different backgrounds are thrown together during World War II: one a working-class girl from Manchester, the other a Scottish aristocrat, one a pilot, the other a wireless operator. Yet whenever their paths cross, they complement each other perfectly and before long become devoted friends. But then a vital mission goes wrong, and one of the friends has to bail out of a faulty plane over France. She is captured by the Gestapo and becomes a prisoner of war. The story begins in Verity's own words, as she writes her account for her captors.

Editor's Pick

Cue the ugly crying
"Fellow editor Emily recommended this one to me, and for that I will always be mad at her/eternally grateful. This is a gorgeous story of friendship during WWII that absolutely cracked my heart open—at one point I was crying so hard I had to pull over on the side of the ride. But please don’t let that deter you—it’s absolutely worth it."—Katie O., Audible Editor

Tense and Unsettling, but surprisingly believable.

At first, confusing. Amazingly woven into a coherent and believable adventure story. Well written, performed.

Excellent mystery and adventure

When I started this book I didn't expect to like it, but it soon grabbed me and I finished it within a day. There was some war history and some air-flight history and some British history, but mostly it was just a "rousing good tale." And the psychological mystery is delightful. I will definitely buy more from both the writer and narrators.

Brilliant story, top shelf

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This was really good and appealed to the entire family, including my 11 and 13 year olds. There were two spots of profanity (the "F" word), but it did not trouble me to hear it with my kids in context. It's a thriller and very well told.

Best book I've read in a long time!

This was a great story with unexpected twists. The first part of the book is told from one viewpoint and the last part of the book from a different viewpoint. I finished the book yesterday and am still thinking about the story.

Phenomenal!

This was an amazing presentation of historical fiction but what made it work so well were the readers! They took written words and breathed life into the characters and story with passion and intensity very, very seldom found in audio books! As good as the writing is, the two ladies made this book!

Kept me guessing

This book had me hooked and kept me guessing from start to finish. Also loved the different voices of the two young protagonists.

Creative !

It’s very interesting how the book was being told by in a way of scrapped up letters in the story, showing the readers how’d it looked like. Makes the readers more interested and think that we are not reading a book but at least a journal about these two fearless females in war times. Though I do say that the kittyhawk section could’ve been more detail it’s overall story came out all together connecting both side stories of the two main characters.

This read is just putting me to sleep!

The narrator has a very pleasant voice, but it is too soft and melodious...it is tranquilizing rather than engaging. As such I really can't tell you much about the story, I am really disappointed!

Overall I enjoyed the unique way this story was told. Rather unusual but it made it gripping
