Publisher's summary

Code Name Verity is a compelling, emotionally rich story with universal themes of friendship and loyalty, heroism and bravery. Two young women from totally different backgrounds are thrown together during World War II: one a working-class girl from Manchester, the other a Scottish aristocrat, one a pilot, the other a wireless operator. Yet whenever their paths cross, they complement each other perfectly and before long become devoted friends. But then a vital mission goes wrong, and one of the friends has to bail out of a faulty plane over France. She is captured by the Gestapo and becomes a prisoner of war. The story begins in Verity's own words, as she writes her account for her captors.

Editor's Pick

Cue the ugly crying
"Fellow editor Emily recommended this one to me, and for that I will always be mad at her/eternally grateful. This is a gorgeous story of friendship during WWII that absolutely cracked my heart open—at one point I was crying so hard I had to pull over on the side of the ride. But please don’t let that deter you—it’s absolutely worth it."—Katie O., Audible Editor

Intriguing

One of the best World War 2 novels that I have read in a long time. It was mentioned that all wireless operators in the RAF and SPS had their own code names.
My father was a wireless operator during WW2 based in Burma. I still have his flight log book. Maybe his code is mentioned there ; although I doubt it.

Kind of speechless

This is a very rare 5 star in all categories. Both narrations were superb. Morven’s portrayal of Julie was spell binding in places. Her singing of Auld Lang Syne was beautiful and heartbreaking. I fell in love with this character. She was so human, her honesty was refreshing. After Morven’s Julie, Lucy’s portrayal of Mattie was a little jarring but warmed to it. Another very relatable character with flaws but a great unwavering love. There are some details that were a little confusing in Julie’s writings that came together perfectly. This is a book I will listen to again, for the beauty of the writing and message

Well done WWII story with a believable female lead

Full disclosure, I'm a sucker for a story that involves a Scottish accent. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. it's clever, believable, and very entertaining. The story is told through the eyes of two close women, and is woven together in a way that I found very satisfying. On top of being a good story, the reader for this audible could not have been better chosen!

Wow.

I stumbled on this book on a pinterest list, and found it captivating. I listened to the audiobook and the performance wonderful. Better with proper german, scottish and french pronunciation.

The journal entry style, the literary refernces, the plot all carried me along and compelled me to keep listening. The friendship and characters were lovely to meet. The outcome, while shocking was believable and right.

It shall sit beside "A Separate Peace" as a favorite.

Very good story about women's role English WWII.

Although slow in beginning, excellent story. Loved the characters and different take on WWII. Hard to put down.

Great story, wonderful narrators, difficult to follow

The narration of the story is beautifully done, and because of that, I pushed myself to keep going because I found myself being frustrated that the storyline was so convoluted and difficult to follow. My hope was that it would all come together at the end, and it did, for sure, but I think I would have given up after the first few chapters if I weren't listening to it.

A Must Read

This book was fabulously well-written. I must say it is one of the most enjoyable books I have picked up in a long time. The story carefully details life as a female pilot during WWII.

I cannot find any criticism regarding the story and the way it was written. The content was well put together and the reading of the story in this book added nicely to the sharing of this product.

I will listen to this book again and I look forward to pieces of history that I may have missed on the first listen and pick up on my second time around.

Gripping story of people you wish you could meet

Story of two young women in WWII, one an air transport pilot, the other a special agent, who become close friends. Story is told half by one, then half by the other as they explain from their own perspective what went awry in a special mission. This is a compelling storytelling device, because as one listens to the second half, one re-interprets the first. THe characters -- including secondary characters -- are well developed. I wished I could meet some of them. I learned a lot about women in special roles in the British military. Excellent narration.

absolutely fantastic

I listen to audio books every single day and it is very rare that I find one that makes me get as emotionally involved as this one did...I would find myself crying while driving down the road. there are heart-stopping moments that will take you right out of your own world...I had never heard of this author and will definitely listen to more of her books...the narrator was perfect!!
