Publisher's summary

Code Name Verity is a compelling, emotionally rich story with universal themes of friendship and loyalty, heroism and bravery. Two young women from totally different backgrounds are thrown together during World War II: one a working-class girl from Manchester, the other a Scottish aristocrat, one a pilot, the other a wireless operator. Yet whenever their paths cross, they complement each other perfectly and before long become devoted friends. But then a vital mission goes wrong, and one of the friends has to bail out of a faulty plane over France. She is captured by the Gestapo and becomes a prisoner of war. The story begins in Verity's own words, as she writes her account for her captors.

Editor's Pick

Cue the ugly crying
"Fellow editor Emily recommended this one to me, and for that I will always be mad at her/eternally grateful. This is a gorgeous story of friendship during WWII that absolutely cracked my heart open—at one point I was crying so hard I had to pull over on the side of the ride. But please don’t let that deter you—it’s absolutely worth it."—Katie O., Audible Editor

Beautifully written, engrossing and real.

I loved it. It was well told and had me wanting to know more at every turn. It's real, a work of fiction yes but nevertheless real. It depicts war from the point of view of those who fought it, many of whom could not have felt celebratory when it was over, moving on with their lives, hoping against hope, to forget.

Amazing

The performance was spectacular! The book was exciting, fulfilling and heartbreaking! It has been a long time since I have felt so utterly affected and moved by the characters of a book yet this book has broken that streak. I highly recommend it to anyone!

Keep reading - It is worth it in the end

This book was selected as part of my book club so I read it. I "put it down" a few times and had a hard time engaging in the early chapters of the book. Just when I was ready to call it quits a friend in my book club said "its worth it, read it.". She was right. I really enjoyed the story, and loved "Verity". When I went back and re listened to it (yes, I even re listened with fresh ears.) I picked on on things I had not prior, and I felt more of connection with both ladies on the 2nd go round.

Kiss me hardy!!

Couldn't put it down

...this book was captivating - not in the way a mystery or thriller is captivating, but the way a good story begs hearing. The stories construction....and I do mean construction...is unique and easily delivered so there is no effort in understanding. There is history, sadness, artistic joy, and friendship...the binding friendship that only forms through shared strife and/or joy. The narration is exquisite. Please read...

Exciting and Detailed

Loved this story. Filled with exciting plot twists, clandestine thrills, and incredible detail, Code Name Verity keeps the reader engaged and offers something that feels fresh in the saturated genre of WW2 historical fiction.

The audible version of this story is one of the best narrations I've heard, including multiple narrators to separate the voices of two main characters and a sung rendition of Auld Lang Syne.

TAKE THE SHOT!!

this book absolutely sent me over the edge! I was so frustrated the entire time trying to look past the absolutely inconceivable idea of writing a love story to your Nazi captors so they dont kill you. very beautiful story if you can enjoy the details of the story and kind of ignore some of the bigger overarching plot lines.

(kind of spoiler)

she put a bullet through a chain but was too scared to shoot the guards for fear of hitting a prisoner?? but oh wait as soon as it came time to kill someone she made that shot!
