Publisher's summary

Code Name Verity is a compelling, emotionally rich story with universal themes of friendship and loyalty, heroism and bravery. Two young women from totally different backgrounds are thrown together during World War II: one a working-class girl from Manchester, the other a Scottish aristocrat, one a pilot, the other a wireless operator. Yet whenever their paths cross, they complement each other perfectly and before long become devoted friends. But then a vital mission goes wrong, and one of the friends has to bail out of a faulty plane over France. She is captured by the Gestapo and becomes a prisoner of war. The story begins in Verity's own words, as she writes her account for her captors.

Editor's Pick

Cue the ugly crying
"Fellow editor Emily recommended this one to me, and for that I will always be mad at her/eternally grateful. This is a gorgeous story of friendship during WWII that absolutely cracked my heart open—at one point I was crying so hard I had to pull over on the side of the ride. But please don’t let that deter you—it’s absolutely worth it."—Katie O., Audible Editor

Not meant for me I think

While the after the fact writing throughout makes for an interest thought it lets the action down at the most important times. Perhaps it is better with a real book to see the jumps but can be confusing with audio.

little action but great-it's British not Hollywood

Nevertheless, it is fascinating. Maybe it's more a girl book than a boy book since it is mostly about the women of the war. It's charm is not in the action, but rather in the slow, steady buildup of characters and relationships until finally everything clicks into place and you get it.

There are lots of surprises along the way which you delightfully discover, and there's also love and anguish and loyalty and finally, truth. Excellent.

Usually having more than one narrator gets in the way of the story, but here, it is understandable, and enjoyable. Both readers did a great job.

Great story, Great reader

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes! Although it was a heavy subject matter (POW in WWII) the author's style pulls you in to the point where you deeply feel for Verity & Maddie. Two amazing woman who even in the darkest times find goodness in humanity, humor, and reasons to do on. The readers were 2 of the best readers I have heard and brought the story to the next level.
