Publisher's summary

Unforgettable characters and a fascinating 1920s setting.

It's the end of the roaring twenties, and the exuberant and Honourable Phryne Fisher is dancing and gaming with gay abandon. But she becomes bored with London and the endless round of parties. In search of excitement, she sets her sights on a spot of detective work in Melbourne, Australia. And so mystery and the beautiful Russian dancer, Sasha de Lisse, appear in her life. From then on it's all cocaine and communism until her adventure reaches its steamy end in the Turkish baths of Little Lonsdale Street.

didn't want it to end.

I am so glad this is a long series. The narrator did a great job, the story was gripping. I love the TV show so the characters have a impression in my head. I cannot wait to start the second book.

Intriguing but...

I enjoyed the story but it seems like Phryne Fisher is quite a “Mary Sue” character. Beautiful, perfect, intelligent, rich, up on all the styles and trends, trained in physical combat, poor childhood, lucky in finances, can do accents, thinks of everything, solves everything, humble, agreeable, good judge of character, and sexually free. The narrator does a good job, especially with the accents. I just didn’t like the very audible swallowing sounds she had that I don’t hear in any other book as well as jarring silent pauses.

Show Is Better

This is an okay book. The story is approachable and the characters mostly believable. I do enjoy the author's details on Phryne's clothes. However, overall, the Miss Fisher TV show (available on Netflix) is much richer, better characters, and more fashion and music.
Performance is a little flat, but enjoyable.

Fun Flapper

Enjoyed this snappy, stylish 20's lady. The narrator was difficult at time to listen to because she seemed to be needing to take a breath or drink some water. Still, her accents were very good.

Miss Fisher is Great

Characters are fleshed out quickly. Miss Fisher's antics are fun.
Mystery is a bit week.

Amazing!

I absolutely LOVED this book! I loved watching the series so much and have been dying to read the novels! This absolutely delivered for me! The story whisked me away on an adventure in Australia back when the days were simple, but mystery and action still abound! I love the seductive, intelligent miss Phryne Fisher and her deductive sleuthing. A heroine and feminist in her own right! Kerry Greenwood has created an amazing world I wish I could step into!

Cocaine Blues

I LOVED the Miss Fischer tv show and sequel series. I was thrilled when I found out there was a book series that was with the original series. I LOVED this book and can't wait to listen to the rest of the books.

A good reading of one of my favorite book series

I’ve been reading the Phryne books for years. This is very well done and fits my sense of the characters. Phryne is a wonderful and strong woman who knows what she wants ... and gets it!

My only issue is that there is a skip in Chapter 17 around the 4:10 mark. I am hoping there are no other problems with the file.
