Publisher's summary

On October 1st, God is in His heaven, the stock market stands at 10,140, most of the planes are on time, and Clayton Riddell, an artist from Maine, is almost bouncing up Boylston Street in Boston. He's just landed a comic book deal that might finally enable him to support his family by making art instead of teaching it. He's already picked up a gift for his long-suffering wife, and he knows just what he'll get for his boy Johnny. Why not a little treat for himself? Clay's feeling good about the future.

That changes in a hurry. The cause of the devastation is a phenomenon that will come to be known as The Pulse, and the delivery method is a cell phone. Everyone's cell phone. Clay and the few desperate survivors who join him suddenly find themselves in the pitch-black night of civilization's darkest age, surrounded by chaos, carnage, and a human horde that has been reduced to its basest nature...and then begins to evolve.

There are 193 million cell phones in the United States alone. Who doesn't have one? Stephen King's utterly gripping, gory, and fascinating novel doesn't just ask the question "Can you hear me now?" It answers it with a vengeance.

Critic reviews

"King's imagining of what is more or less post-Armageddon Boston is rich, and the sociological asides made by his characters along the way...are jaunty and witty." (Publishers Weekly)

Good story. Bad narration.

The narrator doesn't really seem to enjoy reading this book. His reading style captured almost no emotion whatsoever. Still worth reading though.

Good story, tedious reading

Headline says it all. The moderator was very monotone and while I can usually listen to a book easily in any environment, I had to be in a quiet place with no distractions to follow this one. Annoying for someone who does virtually everything with a book playing in the background.

Hard to Listen

I loved the story, the way Stephen King draws you in, however, it was extremely hard to listen to as the narrator made it pretty tough, he has little to no inflection in his voice, at times sounding like Clint Eastwood, which kept throwing me off the story itself, I would much rather listen to fingernails on a chalk board.

Great Book, Better Than The Movie

Another great book by Stephen King. I watched the movie first before getting this book and listening to it. Very glad I did, this book had a much better ending than the movie did.

Good and Fast paced

On October 1st at 3pm The Pulse started and everyone who used their phone went crazy

And so it begins

This book starts with a bang and in my opinion it doesnt slow down , i honestly dont understand why it gets so much hate , the characters are likable and you care for them and want to see them win and the plot is scary specially now a days when everyone has a phone ( this book was written in 2006 , less phones and no smartphones yet ) by the end you want to know more and that is the sign of a good book IMO
