Publisher's summary

In the Atlantic Ocean, hurricane Helena is gathering strength, becoming the most powerful storm in recorded history. As Helena bears down on Bermuda, Donovan Nash, along with other members of the scientific research organization Eco-Watch, are called to fly in and extract key government people who have been studying Helena. For Donovan Nash, the routine mission turns deadly when an attempt is made on the life of the lead scientist.

A woman from the past, Dr. Lauren McKenna, is suddenly thrust back into his life. With 300 mph winds and waves over 90 feet, Helena marches relentlessly for the vulnerable east coast of the United States. In a bold attempt to diffuse the power of the hurricane, Eco-Watch is called upon to conduct a final flight above the massive fury, where the jet suffers a catastrophic engine failure. Now the only option is to maneuver the crippled airplane into the calm of Helena's eye.

A very high level of constant suspense

Audible classifies Category Five contemporary fiction; it's actually science fiction. The theory that a very large hydrogen bomb with disrupt/destroy very large and powerful hurricane has been around for more than 50 years and has been thoroughly discredited. The idea that "global warming" will cause larger and more powerful hurricanes isn't credible because experience demonstrates the opposite. Nevertheless, Category Five provides lots of anxious uncertainty for the listener when listenes to as the science fiction that it is.

Narration is excellent.

Had to finish it in one day due to the suspense.

Would you consider the audio edition of Category Five to be better than the print version?

I usually stick to mysteries. This was as good or better! At first I thought the narrator was going to make the listening dull, but I was pleasantly surprised. He was perfect for the part.
I totally recommend this book for its suspense, humor, and unexpected twists. Loved it.

What other book might you compare Category Five to and why?

I think this book fits in with books by Clive Cussler, but this one is more realistic. The hero is more human rather than a macho man.

Which scene was your favorite?

I enjoyed the emergency landing in Russia.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I did listen to it in one sitting.

Any additional comments?

This was a surprising and delightful surprise. I am glad I came across it and will check out more by Philip Donlay.

Can't wait to hear the next Donovan Nash Adventure

This book exceeded my expectations! Philip Donlay's mother is a friend of mine and I purchased this book because I admire her and wanted to read a book written by her son. I could NOT stop listening. The characters are well developed and likable. The story line was fascinating--a horrible hurricane headed to destroy the Northeast, a love story, and a mystery!! The book was interesting, clean and thrilling!!!

Really?

Would be two stars without the global warming BS.

The main characters are likable - not very believable - but likable .

The performance was good.

I really lost it with the "villian" - no way he should overpower an agent once - let alone twice...

And based on the description of him no way he can get through the submersible hatch - so why is he in the raft?

Not a bad core concept - would benefit from a reality coach.

A very good book

I listen to this book over and over. Very easy to follow. The author did his homework. It was easy to overlook the mistakes in reading.

Not Bad.. Not Great

What did you like best about Category Five? What did you like least?

The premise of a category five hurricane threatening the U.S. east coast was intriguing enough to make me get this. It's completely plausible and terrifying. What I didn't like was all the extra stuff like spies, Russian subs and secret off the book identities and organizations that just didn't seem necessary. You should have enough dramatic material with a storm with 300+ mph winds about to hit the middle of the east coast. Another problem I had with this story was the science, or the lack of it. For example, I think you need to explain to listeners how a plane can find and fly through "weak spots" in a storm that big and powerful. There are other examples but I don't want to give anything away.

Would you recommend Category Five to your friends? Why or why not?

Maybe. I wouldn't say avoid it like the plague.

A love story for a man to enjoy. Good Read.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, it's realistic and the characters and plot are well written and developed.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Category Five?

The convergence of a category five hurricane and a bomb to stop the storm.

What about Chris Kennedy’s performance did you like?

The narration is as fast paced as the story. Hard to stop reading.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was engaged from the first chapter to the last. The subject is too serious to laugh or cry.

Any additional comments?

Highly Recommend this book and author.
