Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling novelist Nora Roberts captivates millions of fans with her provocative blend of scorching passion and chilling suspense. With Carnal Innocence, she creates a gripping tale of murder, infatuation, and true love in a small southern town. After beautiful concert violinist Caroline Waverly breaks up with her conductor and lover Luis, she escapes to her late grandmother’s home in Innocence, Mississippi. Instead of peace and tranquility, however, she finds the town torn with suspicion over two brutal murders. When she discovers a third victim in the murky waters behind her house, she turns to her dangerously handsome neighbor, Tucker Longstreet, for protection. But Tucker has a reputation for breaking hearts - even worse, the police count him their number one suspect.

You’ll want to lean back in your easy chair and let Nora Robert’s steamy prose and Tom Stechschulte’s stirring interpretation transport you to Innocence where the nights are filled with promise and secrets are hard to keep.

Good story

Good Story. Good narrator. My only issue was the constant use if God and Jesus as curses. It is used quite heavily throuout the book.

Amazing Narration, Rich in Detail

Narrator had a Smokey sexy southern voice. Was pleasantly surprised with the depth of this book. All the characters were well flushed out and developed. The language was very immersive made you really feel like you were in Mississippi. Romance felt secondary to mystery/finding your roots, finding yourself type of story.

Trigger warning: this book is written to be in the early 90s but reads like the early 70s. Lots of N word and some disturbing racism. Also talks explicitly about rape, sexual abuse, domestic violence, raping women while lynching their husbands etc.

I loved Tucker but wasn’t as in love with the character of Caroline and didn’t feel the heat in their love scenes... and the sex scenes were super mild. I also didn’t like the first time they had sex, was awkward. I understand the intimacy issue was to give Tucker and AHA and help build their dynamic but it took the fun and anticipation out of it. Again returning to the idea this book is more of a story about finding yourself etc then your typical romance genre fare. In addition we see Tuckers character grow immensely over the course of the book, we learn his depth, his layers... we see his selflessness his compassion, etc... but Caroline seems to be more or less the same person we were first introduced to she seems to be just along for the ride. Her story with her Mom is never resolved and her character development is just less meaningful. .

Overall a compelling book I would def recommend but just know it has its problems.

Not up to par

The story was very rambling and as a southerner, I have to say, we don’t talk like that. Take away about half of the exaggerated drawl and the book would be much easier to listen to. Not Nora Roberts finest story! There were too many half-hearted suspects and then when the killer was revealed, I wasn’t surprised because there was no one left.

Suspenseful and very intriguing.

This book was well written. Caroline and Tucker ' complement each other. I enjoyed the suspense and the end was unexpected. This is a definite must read.

Southern Doesn't Mean Stupid

The book is excellent & the narrator does a good job on all the main characters & the basic narration. But his version of southern accents makes everyone in the Mississippi town except the main characters sound dumb as dirt. One guy sounds like Forrest
gump for crying out loud. I'm from the south & have a southern accent but I'm not stupid. It's almost a verbal caricature of the south. It's painful to listen. I wish he'd backed off some. I know he can because the main character's accent isn't bad. I'm trying to finish the book. But I won't listen to anymore of his narrations if anyone in the book is from the south.

Murder in the Mississippi

Kept you guessing. Loved the characters and could really relate to the laid back South.
