Publisher's Summary

George MacDonald Fraser, author of the Flashman novels, praises this hearty saga as "one of the great unrecognized novels of the 20th century." Doctor Peter Blood's quiet life is shattered when he is convicted of treason for helping a wounded nobleman in the 1685 rebellion against King James II.
He's swept into a slave ship to Barbados but escapes from slavery and a brutal plantation owner during a Spanish Pirate attack. He becomes a pirate and before long becomes the greatest buccaneer of them all. Raids, sea battles, sword fights, acts of gallantry and low cunning follow, recounted with zest and skill by a natural-born storyteller.

    "Outstanding rendition of classic swashbuckler"

This is an outstanding audiobook on several levels. First, the narration is superb. The narrator has a broad range of characterizations that are beleivable and well maintained throughout the narration. Second, the clarity of the audio recording is excellent. Third, this happens to be one of the classic swashbucklers by Rafael Sabatini. I am hoping audible will add Sabatini's greatest work, Scaramouche, to the library, hopefully narrated by Mr. Whitfield. Until then, Captain Blood is an extremely satisfying and high quality recording.

    "Great book, outstanding narrator"

The listener will owe a huge debt to the talents of the narrator, Robert Whitfield. His rendering of Captain Blood delivers this masterpiece with outstaning effect.
When I purchased the book my hopes were that it would be half as entertaining as Scaramouche (by the same author and narrator), and I am surprised to report that I enjoyed it just as much, which was more than I enjoyed many books in a very long time.

"One of the finest stories ever."

Captain Blood is one of the all time best swashbuckles and historical fiction novels ever. Raphael Sabitini was an extraordinary writer with a fabulous and rich vocabulary, a rich sense of adventure (and the ability to covey it) , and a deep ability to fashion characters. In Captain Blood, he captures the not just the history of the times, but the thoughts, beliefs, and character of the 17th Century. A fabulously good novel.

And a fabulously good reading, in fact, the best read that I have ever heard from an audio book. It is not possible to be disappointed in this audio book. A good buy.

    "Old-Fashioned Adventure"

This rollicking, old-fashioned adventure story is hard to turn off and, once over, left me wishing it would never end. Narrator Robert Whitfield, with his vitality and theatricality, perfectly brings to life Sabatini's energetic storytelling. "Captain Blood" is one of the best audiobooks I have ever purchased and one I will gladly keep in my library to listen to over and over. I loved it!

"Another great book I had never heard of."

I hesitated before ordering Captain Blood. I shouldn’t have.

This story has its share of swashbuckling adventure, but it is mostly about the trials and tribulations of one man, Peter Blood. Blood’s miseries include a false accusation, slavery and an untouchable woman.

In spite of his oppressions, Blood triumphs in the end. How he does is a great story. This unabridged version moves along so well, I don’t see how an editor could leave anything out to create an abridged version.

So well read by Robert Whitfield that I also bought Scaramouche by the same narrator and the same author, Rafael Sabatini. Audio quality is excellent.

    "Swashbuckling Read"

If you are new to Audible and wish to start your subscription off with a clash, boom and a bang. This read is it. Great narration and well written, this book will keep you thrilled and spellbound all the way through. Sabatini creates the original "Pirates of the Carribean." A true bildungsroman. You will know right away this is where Walt must have gotten his nascent notion behind the ride. "Captain Blood" has had a long shelf life but it is still a fresh read. Avail yourself of a book credit when you procure this title.

    "Un-Bloody Adventure with Class"

I love the Sabatini stories, and this one is as good as, if not better than, Scaramouche. The narrator was superb and the story is classic good vs. evil, with satisfying twists and turns.

    "Absolutely fantastic book and narration!"

This is a wonderful, fast-paced adventure tale, enhanced by talented narration. The narrator's delivery is superb, making each voice distinct and alive. Peter Blood's Irish accent is perfect as are the various pirates and foreign soldiers and lords, but almost more impressive is that Arabella's female voice is pleasant and believable, a difficult range for most narrators. I listened to this audiobook with my 13 year old son, and we both loved it. The story has poignancy and humor, along with edge-of-your seat excitement. The wit had us grinning until the oh-so-fun end. Unwilling to give up the adventure, I've ordered the old Errol Flynn/Olivia de Havilland movie version and can't wait to see it again. I can't recommend this audiobook enough. Enjoy!

    "Great and intelligent escape."

Witty, articulate writing and a wonderful story. Imagine Pirates of the Caribbean done by Charles Dickens. Really engaging characters. And the reader is outstanding. Great fun.

    "A real page-turner...."

..or whatever the term is for an audiobook. Sabatini really knows how to tell a tale, and the narrator is superb at doing the voices. Great download.
