Publisher's summary

Eighty-nine-year-old Isabelle McAllister has a big favor to ask her hairdresser, Dorrie. She wants the black single mother to drop everything and drive her from Texas to a funeral in Ohio - tomorrow. Dorrie, fleeing problems of her own and curious about Isabelle’s past, agrees, not knowing it will be a journey that changes both their lives.

Isabelle confesses that, as a teen in 1930s Kentucky, she fell in love with Robert Prewitt, a would-be doctor and the black son of her family’s housekeeper - in a town where blacks weren’t allowed after dark. The tale of their forbidden relationship and its tragic consequences just might help Dorrie find her own way.

Touching love story to the last page.

This book is incredibly well written and filled with emotion. A heart breaking love story, and a life of longing and loss, and how a special friendship can be fostered. No spoiler alert about how the story develops or ends but know that it is well worth the journey.
The performance of the readers was wonderful, and captured both of the main characters spirit in telling the story perfectly.
This is now one of my all time favorite audio books, and I expect that I will listen to it again.

Beautiful story though gut wrenching

Where does Calling Me Home rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

On top list-I felt as if I was part of the story and also telling myself that meddling with people's affair those not yield good fruit

Who was your favorite character and why?

The main character of the book - Isabelle is my favorite. For the strength and courage she had

Have you listened to any of Bahni Turpin and Lorna Raver ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to Bahni Turpin in the help and kitchen house. They both did an excellent job!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did have an extreme reaction- I could not understand Isabella's mum. I suspected that .Pearl was not dead alone. It was a shame that Isabelle knew about Pearl after she died

Any additional comments?

Enjoyed every moment of the book

A fantastic read!

I wasn't too sure about this selection, but the parallel storyline started to captivate me. A fantastic read on love and friendship.

really good

such a great story. the narrators did such a great job bringing their characters to life. I found myself totally invested in what happened to the people in the story, loving some and despising some. and that is what makes a great story.

Predictable but sweet

Nice character arcs for both women, smooth transitions between the historical portions and the present. A bit draggy at times, and an utterly predictable “surprise” at the end,but otherwise an enjoyable and absorbing read.

Wonderful

This is a great book. It is heart wrenching, but has some sweet moments. I loved the relationship between Isabelle and Dottie. Narration was very good, just a little slow. Overall, I loved it.
