Publisher's summary

Here's a satisfying tale of honor, chance, and star-crossed love infused with Southern wit, grace, and charm.

After 20 years, Elizabeth "Betts" McGee has finally managed to put her past behind her. She hasn't been home to beautiful South Carolina and untouched Bulls Island since the tragic night that ended her engagement to Charleston's golden boy, J. D. Langley.

And why is that? Really, this is the story of two old Southern families. The Langley family has more money than the Morgan Stanley Bank. And they think they have more class. The Barrett family made their 19th-century fortune in a less distinguished manner: corner grocery and liquor stores. It's no surprise that when J. D. and Betts fall in love and decide to marry, their parents are none too pleased. And when the love affair comes to an end, everyone is ready to place blame.

Now 20 years have gone by, and Betts, a top investment bank executive, must leave her comfortable life in New York City to return to the home she thought she'd left behind forever. But spearheading the most important project of her career puts her back in contact with everything she's tried so hard to forget: her estranged sister, her father, J. D., and her past.

Once she's home, can Betts keep the secret that threatens all she holds dear? Or will her fear of the past wreck her future happiness? And what about that crazy gator? All will be revealed on Bulls Island.

Really enjoyed this!

There isn't a Benton Frank book I haven't thoroughly enjoyed. This is one of her best.

Actors voices

When the women actor Betz had parts where she was talking to her love interest, the mans voice didn’t sound the same as if he was talking by himself with other folks. You should have them reading those parts together. Otherwise great story, I enjoyed it!

Disappointing

This story line was preposterous. I usually like this author but was disappointed at this one…

No, just no

The story was very cheesy, and the performance was equally cheesy. I am a huge fan of this author and I was excited to listen to this one, however, this book seemed more like a first attempt of a new writer. I could not relate to the characters at all they seemed self-absorbed and unrealistic.

Worst Narration Ever

I could not finish past the first chapter in this book. The narration is so distracting that I could not enjoy the book. Be sure to listen to a sample before purchasing so you don't waste money like I did.

Too Preposterous

NOT Dorothea Benton Frank's best effort. This book does not have the humor and gentle southern wit of most of her books. It is just dumb. She sets up situation that in real life would split families forever. I couldn't even finish it. Flat characters, no warmth.

Not a worthy book.

I have read her other books primarily because I live in Charleston, SC and found them interesting for that reason. Her characters generally lack depth and believability, but this is the worst book to date. I will not bother with future books if there are any!

boring, hated the fake Southern accent

The narrator read so slow and the Southern accent was a little over the top. The cliches were over the top as well. It had a predictable ending. Predictable ....pridictable..

I kept waiting for it to get better

The worst

This is the worst book I have listened to in a very long time. I am sorry I wasted the money.

Easy listening

This book had a nice story line. Not the type that keeps you on your toes waiting. So far I’ve enjoyed Dorothea Benton Frank’s books. I prefer more suspense, but not a bad read.
