When Darcy McCall loses her beloved Aunt Molly, she doesn't expect any sort of inheritance - let alone a small island. Located off the west coast of Ireland, Tara hasn't been lived on for years, but according to Molly's will Darcy must stay there for 12 months in order to fully inherit, and she needs to persuade a village full of people to settle there, too. Darcy has to leave behind her independent city life and swap stylish heels for muddy wellies. Between sorting everything from the plumbing to the pub, Darcy meets confident Conor and ever-grumpy Dermot - but who will make her feel really at home?

Breakfast at Darcy's was an enjoyable light novel. I purchased this after reading Ali McNamara's other novel from "Notting Hill to New York Actually" which I really enjoyed. The setting for this novel on a remote island off the coast of Ireland is different. I found the story interesting but felt there could have been more detail on the roles the people coming to live on the island were going to play. There were areas for instance, Darcy going to buy chocolate at the shop, what shop? In the planning for the island settlement there had been no mention of the shop. I would have preferred a bit more detail, however having said that I really enjoyed the book it was light and a bit different.
I loved the way the author bought the characters to life I felt you really got to know and like them.
I couldn't compare it with other chic lit novels this was not your usual romance more of an light interesting story with a touch of romance.
Beth Chalmer's performance was fine. I have not heard her other performances.
I am not sure this title was the right one. I feel it implies Darcy may have run a cafe or something. What else to call it? I do not know.
The novel was very well written. I like the descriptions of the country. Divine.
I have not heard any of Beth Chalmers books before but having said that she was an enjoyable voice.
I love romantic historical novels.
This is a cute and funny book about a young woman who must find the inner strength and self-confidence, when she and a lot of people must build a village on a island there hasn't been lived on for years. There's just one problem. Darcy is a city girl. She has no idea how to build a village from scratch. The story is great, the characters well developed and I really enjoyed listening. I like Darcy. But i just miss more romance. Overall a nice easy story, that i think most will enjoy.
I really enjoyed this audiobook, and have actually listened to it a couple of times since downloading it. The story was great, the characters well developed and I really enjoyed listening. I can't think of much more to say than that, except if you are after a nice, light hearted story, this might be the one for you.
It was time well spent, it was a relaxing read and perfect for the gym, driving or at night before going to sleep
It was a light, fluffy novel... there were a lot of cute moments but nothing memorable... this book was easy to read as it will be to forget... nonetheless I don't regret finishing it.
Isn't this review format supposed to ruin the surprise for whoever wants to finish it? Anyhow, the book is pretty predictable throughout nonetheless the author managed to create a good twist towards the end
it would be nice to read about the new adventures on the island, even if there should be some more depth into it.
This story had so, so much potential... it often seemed too obvious and bland; for example
**LIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD**
- the author doesn't justify enough the arrival of strangers on the island... why are these people coming and what, do they expect to be pampered?
- the love interests are not discussed thoroughly enough.. I cannot explain enough without ruining the story
Read this book if you just want to spend a few pleasant light hours... the plot is quite cute but don't expect fireworks
Very enjoyable listen, felt the ending was missing something though. Curioisty got the better of me and discovered the epilogue is not included in the audiobook which is a shame.
This is the type of book that you just leave your brain in a bag. It's such an easy book to listen to and the characters are simple and the story and ending are obvious, but if your after something gentle then this is the book. You can just relax and lose yourself in the place the book is set in, I did wish that I could live there certain days when my life was getting a bit hectic.
"Not one for anybody with a brain ..."
I think probably pre-teen and teens or maybe young women who are only looking for that 'once a year' beach read. Don't expect too much!
I was disappointed in this book because the story idea, although wildly unlikely, had so much to offer. Instead I feel like this is what would be reated if a misogynistic man wrote a chick lit book: women have no brains and are only interested in clothes, shoes and hot men.
I like a good chick-lit book as much as the next person but this one was a mistake. The two main characters were vapid narcissists who's only interests in life were 'what designer was he wearing?'. In fact the references to clothes, shoes and deigners lables were so frequent, I could have been listening to an issue of Vogue. One of the girls spends months thinking she has no interest in a guy until accidentally seeing him with his top off - at which point she realises she actually loves him!
The author continually takes the easy way out. If something isn't working, never mind ... conveniently the answer is just around the corner. If you listen to this book and get to the part about the hotel furniture, you will see what I mean.
"Castaway in Ireland"
A girl more interested in her fashion status than much else, is left an island by her auntie, on the proviso that she rebuilds a community there, and stays for a year.
Darcy grows over the year, as does the community, and the Jimmy Choos are replaced with wellies and an appreciation for rural life, while she is left undecided over the moody builder or the flirty boatman.
"I want to live on Tara!"
Ali McNamara has quickly become one of my favorite chick lit authors. Her stories never cease to keep me laughing, romanced and entertained. Thankfully, Breakfast at Darcy's was no exception.
I will admit that I had to warm to Darcy, but this is kind of the point of the story. At the start, she is a self-absorbed, label obsessed, glory hunter... and I didn't really care for her very much. That is until she goes to live on Tara, the Irish island that has been left to her in her Aunt Molly's will. It is on Tara where Darcy truly starts to come into her own. Taken out of the big city and put in charge of other people's well beings, she quickly becomes a character that you can care and root for.
There is a bit of a love triangle... no wait, don't run away that quickly. There is Conor, who is handsome, sweet, and has a love of travelling. Then there is Dermot, who always seems grumpy, uptight and a bit of a know-it-all. However... I was never in any doubt as to who Darcy would end up with in the end. I don't think this is meant to be any real secret to be honest. I was surprised though with a few of the secrets that are uncovered about one of them. I won't post any spoilers, but I really didn't see that coming.
However, my true love for Breakfast at Darcy's comes from Tara itself. I have never wanted pack in my job, and go live on an isolated island as much as I do right now. To say I was jealous of the life that Darcy and the other residents of Tara have been able to live, is an understatement. I would give pretty much anything to be able to live as simple of a life. As long as I had a roof over my head, there is electricity and a bit of Internet access so that I can buy by Kindle and Audible books... I would be in heaven. Absolute heaven.
I do think the only let down to this story would be the ending. It wasn't really bad, it's just that I would have liked there to be a bit more build up to the happily ever after. It seemed a bit rushed, however this could be from me not feeling like I was ready to say goodbye to these characters. I really would love to read more about Darcy, the island's residents, and of Tara itself.
Because I listened to this in Audiobook, I should mention that I have also become a huge fan of Beth Chalmers. This is not the first Audiobook I have listened to her as the narrator, and I hope it will not be my last. She does a superb job, and I think she has an amazing talent with the multiple accents that are used in this book.

"Feel good story"
Really great feel good story about a girl called Darcy who finds a aunt has left her an island and lots of money in her will but to inherit has to live on the island for 12 months and set up a community . Lots of laughter fun and even romance
Quirky story line
This book was very slow going and I found myself bored more often than not. Persevered till the end but even the ending wasn't great!
"Breakfast At Darcy’s"
Let’s all go live on an Island!
Ali McNamara paints a wonderful audio picture of how you can triumph over adversity with a little bit of self belief & the help of good friends…oh & that love can blossom when you very least expect it.
By the end I really wished I could go & book little retreat getaway on that very Island.
I wish there were more McNamara titles on Audible.
"Breakfast? I wish it was Lunch and Tea!"
