Editorial reviews

Isabel Keating's voice shines in her portrayal of characters who engage in a holiday shop-decorating contest in Savannah, Georgia. Keating's voice reflects antiques dealer Weezie Foley's enthusiasm as she embraces the task of decorating her store in a 1950s' theme. As Weezie makes holiday plans with boyfriend Daniel, her voice is tinged with humor, a tone that contrasts well with his deep, pragmatic tones. Weezie's neighbor, a fellow shop owner in the historic district, has a clear, distinctive Hispanic accent, complete with a touch of smugness that expresses his conviction that he will win the decorating contest. Keating's diction remains crisp and clear, even as she provides many of her characters with lilting Southern accents.

Publisher's summary

It's the week before Christmas, and antiques dealer Weezie Foley is in a frenzy to deck out her shop for the Savannah historical district decorating contest, which she intends to win. Weezie is ready to shoot herself with her glue gun by the time she's done, but the results are stunning. She's certainly one-upped the owners of the trendy shop around the corner.

But suddenly things start to go missing from her display, and there seems to be an uninvited midnight visitor to her shop. Still, Weezie has high hopes for the holiday, maybe in the form of an engagement ring from her chef boyfriend. But Daniel, always moody at the holidays, seems more distant than usual.

Throw in Weezie's decidedly odd family, a mysterious 1950s Christmas-tree pin, and even a little help from the King himself (Elvis, that is), and maybe there will be a pocketful of miracles for Weezie this Christmas Eve.

Good Story

I love the Savannah setting. I have visited Savannah and Tybee Island, I can picture the the city and its sites as the narrarator reads the story. I enjoy the characters Eloise and her long time friend Bebe.
I do think the male voices need some work.
Overall an enjoyable and entertaining listen!

Good book, narrator problems

It's almost impossible to ruin one of the "Southern" books by Mary Kay Andrews -- I'm not so fond of the other series, but these books, packed with fun stuff about picking and antiquing and junk shopping -- and selling -- are always interesting. I've both listened to the other books in this series and read them a several times over. Nothing very profound here, just plain old good fun.

That said, this one came close to being ruined by the narrator. In the first two minutes, she committed the first goof -- pronouncing Weezie's wacky sidekick's name as "BeeBee" instead of 'Bay Bay'. It's important, because in one of the earlier books, Andrews makes a big point about how the name is pronounced, and why. So right away, I knew this was going to be a less-than-terrific narrator.

Some of the other accents are just atrocious -- one character she makes sound as though he's a monster, growling, just out of the grave. She messes around with the gay characters in such a way I'm surprised people haven't complained -- it's not pleasant.

Still, you'd have to work harder than this narrator to ruin the book -- its a good short listen, still fun. Just try to let that horrible narration go in one ear and out the other...

Started out fun...

I chose this book because I thought it was a Christmas mystery, but nothing actually HAPPENS. It's more light romance and family drama, so it's probably just not the right series for me. The beginning is really fun, and I had high hopes, but I almost gave up on the book during the Christmas Eve dinner scene.

Love this book!

I love the Christmas storyline. The narrator is my favorite. She knows how to do a great southern accent. The story is touching, but I guffawed throughout. I do like humor in my books. Give this Weezie and BeBe series a try.

fun Christmas story

A sweet story with interesting twists and insights and some beloved characters! Had a hard time with the reader's voicings. Musical interludes seemed to come out of nowhere and always had me checking for incoming calls.

???

Enjoyed the story, BUT the narration was horrible. She made the characters sound like stupid cartoon people, especially the men.

Love this Book!!!

I've read this book before and it's a favorite!! My daughter and I listened to it together various times throughout the holiday and we both enjoyed it so much!!! She absolutely loved the story and I loved re-living it again through this wonderful narration. I even sent a copy of the book to a southern friend of mine that has been reading and enjoying it too!!!
