Publisher's summary

This collection of short stories from the master of modern fiction is available only as an audiobook. In Blood and Smoke, Stephen King takes us inside a world of yearning and paranoia, isolation and addiction. It is the world of the smoker. In this audio-only collection, the now politically incorrect habit plays a key role in the fates of three different men in three unabridged stories of unfiltered suspense. In Lunch at the Gotham Café, Steve Davis is suffering through intense withdrawal - from both nicotine and his wife. His desperation for a cigarette and for his ex are almost too much to bear, but that's nothing compared to the horrors that await him at a trendy Manhattan restaurant. In 1408, Mike Enslin, best selling author of "true" ghost stories, decides to spend the night in New York City's most haunted hotel room. But he must live to write about it without the help of his ex best-friends, his trusty smokes. And in In the Deathroom, a man named Fletcher is held captive in a Central American stronghold. His captors will use any torturous means necessary to extract the information they want from him. His only hope lies with his last request - one last cigarette, please.

Features the tale 1408, now a Dimension Films motion picture starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson.

A couple of the stories are in other books

If you're looking for something new this may not be what you're looking for but if you're looking to review Some old Stephen King stories that you loved then it is definitely worth purchasing and listening to I personally immensely enjoyed it

Chilling and suspenseful

Amazingly read by Stephen King. A time less Classic for the night owls working graveyard shifts. You won't be disappointed.

Lunch at the Gotham Cafe

King’s reading of Lunch at the Gotham Cafe makes me go “Eeeeeeeeeee…..”. I love it!

A good anthology to pass the time

This book was a good little mix of stuff. I liked the last two stories way better than the first one but overall, not a bad little book to waste the time with. You can see where the title comes from in each of the three stories but other than that each story is unique in characters and feel.

Lunch at the Gotham Café – This was my least favorite of the three. I didn’t connect with the main character and it almost felt like King wrote this as part of a bigger story that never developed. It seemed to be missing something all the way through as I listened.

1408 – I like this story but I did find my mind wandering off occasionally as it wasn’t as intense or scary as I hoped it would be. I have never seen the movie but always this story was a straight up horror. It does take a lot for a book to be scary to me but this one seemed like one long “drug” trip for Mike and not anything really scary but it was still interesting and it grabbed me right from the start.

In the Death Room – The best of all three in my opinion. Unlike 1408, this story seemed to only have a climax with no real beginning to the story. Unlike Lunch at the Gotham Café, it doesn’t matter there isn’t a clear beginning. The story is intense, and you are immediately rooting for Fletcher and almost feel yourself fighting for his light along with him.

Really liked this.

I had listened to this in the early 2000's and had to search to find In the Death Room. I enjoyed Stephen King reading it.

Smokers Beware

Stephen King always suprises you. If you enjoy reading something besides the standard "Scary Carrie" stories, try this collection which represents an amalgam of short works on the theme of smoking. Not only will you enjoy the stories, you'll probably find ample reason to quit smoking after doing so.

Enjoying Stephen King again

I have no time to read. I have two kids and a full time job so this is perfect. Getting used to Stephen's voice takes a little time, but if you have seen him on tv or in person talking its much easier to get used to it. As for his reading, its just great. People have said that hes one tone or boring, well he is a professional writer and this is not his usual gig. I look at this as a gift of sorts and we could have done much worse than this.
I've downloaded all of his books that he reads and I'm glad I did. You never know when a treasure like this will be gone for good.

1408 saves this purchase

1408 is the only story of the 3 worth listening to. it should have its own release for much cheaper than $22. In the Death Room would have been fine, but the accents King was giving the characters made it cringy to listen to.
