Publisher's summary

“Rice writes with her usual erotic and historically evocative flair. (People)

Once a proud Senator in Imperial Rome, Marius is kidnapped and forced into that dark realm of blood, where he is made a protector of the Queen and King of the vampires - in whom the core of the supernatural race resides. Through his eyes we see the fall of pagan Rome to the Emperor Constantine, the horrific sack of the Eternal City at the hands of the Visigoths, and the vile aftermath of the Black Death. Ultimately restored by the beauty of the Renaissance, Marius becomes a painter, living dangerously yet happily among mortals, and giving his heart to the great master Botticelli, to the bewitching courtesan Bianca, and to the mysterious young apprentice Armand. But it is in the present day, deep in the jungle, when Marius will meet his fate seeking justice from the oldest vampires in the world....

My all time favorite from Anne Rice!

Blood and Gold, the story of the vampire Marius de Romanus, a child of the millennium has to the be one of the most captivating exquisite immortals of his kind. This book is one of Anne Rice's most perfect tales. She's at her best here with the years of history intertwine with a fictional tale of the vampire Marius who displays "all the conviction of a mortal man." I love this book. I love this story and I love Marius.

Good reads

I liked it. Marius is a great character. Narration was good and in a British accent. Marius is kind of a selfish dude , which fits the artist temperament. Good read if you’re into the world building aspect of the Vampire chronicles

Very descriptive

I definitely enjoyed how the story is very detailed in describing the individuals. The interconnection between books is very good.

wonderful

I found this reading of Blood and Gold to be luxurious, Roger Rees evoking the majesty and timelessness of Marius without sounding like a caricature. His inflection with the female characters was mildly saccharine, but this long and detail-rich story was awesome to have in this format. I loved every minute detail, and the delivery was really well done. If you want action, read Tom Clancy or what have you. If you want deep relationships, painstaking picture-painting, and really distinct characters, this book is worth a long and exciting listen. I will listen to it again, eventually, the way I re-read the books, when I am ready to revisit these places.

Good book

Enjoyable. Rich with history and detail. Well read by the narrator. Some sections of the story drag, while others feel rushed (not by the narrator). I didn't enjoy this quite as much as The Vampire Armand... either in performance or story line, but that should deter anyone for giving this a shot.

The story. Anne Rice creates a world that is absolutely mesmerizing. I read this book years ago, but bought it anyway and enjoyed listening to it all over again!

Great voice for a narrator.

Who was the most memorable character of Blood and Gold and why?

Marius, of course. He is the main character, after all. It's his life story.
