Publisher's summary

“Rice writes with her usual erotic and historically evocative flair. (People)

Once a proud Senator in Imperial Rome, Marius is kidnapped and forced into that dark realm of blood, where he is made a protector of the Queen and King of the vampires - in whom the core of the supernatural race resides. Through his eyes we see the fall of pagan Rome to the Emperor Constantine, the horrific sack of the Eternal City at the hands of the Visigoths, and the vile aftermath of the Black Death. Ultimately restored by the beauty of the Renaissance, Marius becomes a painter, living dangerously yet happily among mortals, and giving his heart to the great master Botticelli, to the bewitching courtesan Bianca, and to the mysterious young apprentice Armand. But it is in the present day, deep in the jungle, when Marius will meet his fate seeking justice from the oldest vampires in the world....

wonderful

I found this reading of Blood and Gold to be luxurious, Roger Rees evoking the majesty and timelessness of Marius without sounding like a caricature. His inflection with the female characters was mildly saccharine, but this long and detail-rich story was awesome to have in this format. I loved every minute detail, and the delivery was really well done. If you want action, read Tom Clancy or what have you. If you want deep relationships, painstaking picture-painting, and really distinct characters, this book is worth a long and exciting listen. I will listen to it again, eventually, the way I re-read the books, when I am ready to revisit these places.

One of the Better of the Latter Vampire Chronicles

Blood and Gold, the story of Marius, is one of the better books of the latter cycle of Vampire Chronicles. Yes, it does rehash some of the material from The Vampire Armand and Pandora, but it doesn't take from the overall story and the great rapport between Marius and Thorn. Roger Rees does a good job with the text, although his accent for Thorn sounds more like Dracula than a former Viking. Definately worth reading and listening to.

100% Anne Rice

A great continuation of the, ?hopefully?, endless ?Vampire Series?, it is thrilling, chilling and mind expanding. Rice gives yet another rendition of her spiritual world. Excellent!!

A look at Marius's Life

If you are an Anne Rice reader of her "Vampire Chronicles" this gives an explanation of the life of Marius far more in depth.

It is a worthwhile read if you have read the "Chronicles," and are looking for more information regarding this character to fill in the gaps.

Also, it brings in new characters as well as expounding on a few of the past characters. I looked at it more as an autobiography of Marius.

It is a worthwhile read once only in my opinion.

Loved it!

I was very happy to see some unabridged versions of Anne Rice novels. I started with Merrick, and I was not disappointed! The narrator did an excellent job, and the prose was beautiful. I actually enjoyed this audio version even more than I enjoyed reading the book. A great choice for Anne Rice fans.

Tedious and boring

I see that most of the reviews are overwhelming positive, which I don't understand. I am a big fan of the vampire chronicles, but Blood and Gold bored me. It's slow and the action that does take place is sparse and short-lived. It's descriptive to the point of being tedious. This was particularly irritating to me. I found myself over and over again thinking "Can we just get on with the story already?". I really can't recommend this to anyone, even Anne Rice fans.

facinating

Finally the history of the immortal blood-drinker Marius is told from beginning to end. It is absolutely facinating, historically descriptive, thoroughly entertaining, and all encompassing. I loved it from beginning to end.
