Publisher's summary

Author of the National Book Award-winning All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy is one of the most provocative American stylists to emerge in the last century. The striking novel Blood Meridian offers an unflinching narrative of the brutality that accompanied the push west on the 1850s Texas frontier.

Critic reviews

“The authentic American apocalyptic novel…I venture that no other living American novelist, not even Pynchon, has given us a book as strong and memorable as Blood Meridian.” (Harold Bloom)
"McCarthy is a writer to be read, to be admired, and quite honestly envied." (Ralph Ellison)
"McCarthy is a born narrator, and his writing has, line by line, the stab of actuality. He is here to stay." (Robert Penn Warren)

Couldn’t follow the story

I have read a few Cormac McCarthy books and enjoyed them. I like his writing and the way he weaves a story. This was the first of his books I listened to, as a truck driver I started listening to audiobooks while I drive. As someone previously mentioned maybe this book should be read and not listened. I did not like the narration as I felt I was hearing a tech manual instead of a story. I plan to read the book and give it another chance.

Unrelentingly brutal

Unrelentingly brutal, and that's the point. There are no heroes, which makes us rethink all other books of a similar nature.

Absolutely incredible.

People complain about not understanding; It’s written that way on purpose. There’s a good amount of synopses on YouTube and abroad. Definitely gonna listen a few more times.

Just okay

I probably would’ve liked it more if the narrator didn’t make so many mouth sounds that kept grossing me out. Couldn’t get over that lol

Epic pros

One of the most beautifully written novels ever. Startling imagery deftly penned, while describing the most base elements of human capacity for survival and brutality.

In Awe

This book is something that happens once a century, and thankfully, we are alive while it's out.

One of the best ever

Great writing and narration. Brutal, frightening, challenging. I recommend “Notes on Blood Meridian” by John Sepich to learn the historical research McCarthy did. Amazing History of the southwest.
