Publisher's summary

And Lucifer said, “Let us rise against Him now in all our numbers, and pull the walls of heaven down…”

The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm - that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict.

Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon. There, she tells Thomas, she will fulfill her mission: to confront the evil that has devastated the earth and to restore to this betrayed, murderous knight the nobility and hope of salvation he long abandoned.

As Hell unleashes its wrath, and as the true nature of the girl is revealed, Thomas will find himself on a macabre battleground of angels, demons, saints, and the risen dead - and in the midst of a desperate struggle for nothing less than the soul of man.

Christopher Buehlman is a writer and performer from St. Petersburg, Florida. The winner of the 2007 Bridport Prize for poetry, he is also the author of several plays and the acclaimed horror novel Those Across the River. He lives with his wife and his rescued dog, Duck.

Critic reviews

“Having made a huge bloody splash with Those across the River, Buehlman returns with a book set in 1348 Europe…It’s intriguing that Buehlman has leapt so far from the mid-century Southern setting of his first novel, just as intriguing that he’s also an award-winning poet. Expect demand.” ( Library Journal)

Outstanding

If you love worlds filled with grim fantasy, you will enjoy Between Two Fires. Buehlman seamlessly blends historical events with supernatural creatures, and West's narration is second to none.

Ultimately a good book.

most definitely a good book. i will say I got bored of it at some point and stopped paying full attention or I'd get lost between chapters but that may just be my short attention span but ultimately I loved it. i am a sucker for historical fiction and this book is spot on. shout out to Christopher Buehlman and shout out to the illustrious voice of Steve West! i definitely recommend it.

Entertaining but slow

Amazing performance! The authors voice is captivating and gives life to the characters! It was a bit of a slow read overall, and needed 1.25x

Not a book for easily disturbed minds..

There were times when I was unsure, and thought to stop listening, but every single one of those times, I was glad I didn't. This book pushes the boundaries of what many people would deem "acceptable", then pushes just a tiny bit further! But then it reels you right back in with the beauty of the vast space between good and evil. It shows that good can be found even in the darkest of times, and forgiveness is possible, in anyone. Exceptional.

Not even done with the book yet but wow

I didn’t expect to cry, or to feel anything from this book. But after the torture, death, and a fate worse than death. I see the light and I feel the love. This whole book was written like a story straight from the Bible. Coming from someone non religious this would normally put me off but this was done masterfully. Good job

Dark Medieval Fantasy

I don't know how you can set a fantasy notlvel during the Black Death, but this author pulls it off. Unlike anything I've ever read.
