Publisher's summary

Nonny Frett understands the meanings of "rock" and "hard place" better than any woman ever born. She's got two mothers, "one deaf-blind and the other four baby steps from flat crazy". She's got two men: her husband, who's easing out the back door; and her best friend, who's laying siege to her heart in her front yard. She has a job that holds her in the city, and she's addicted to a little girl who's stuck deep in the country. To top it off, she has two families: the Fretts, who stole her and raised her right; and the Crabtrees, who lost her and can't forget that they've been done wrong.

In Between, Georgia, population 90, a feud that began the night Nonny was born is escalating, and a random act of violence will set the torch to a 30-year-old stash of highly flammable secrets. This might be just what the town needs, if only Nonny wasn't sitting in the middle of it.

Critic reviews

"Plenty of Southern sass and rueful, charming confidences make this a theatrical and well-paced Southern family drama." (Publishers Weekly)
"Quirky and touching....A climactic ending with perfect story resolution makes this book tidy and uplifting." (Booklist)

Great listen.

I really liked this book. It is very similar to Jackson's "Gods in Alabama" but good enough to forgive and forget that. Great characters, lots to keep one interested and good narration. Only complaint is I don't think the sex scenes need to be explicit. There is only a couple but still.

I love this book. The author who is also the narrator is amazing. I love her ability to give all characters such depth and great personalities. It is a story of love, growth, & laughter.

be patient, and you will NOT be disappointed

This is one of those books that is so well-written that even though the first part of it is a bit slow, it is interesting enough that you KNOW something good is going to happen - and you will NOT be disappointed (I listened to the first half of the book over a week and the second half in one day)! The way things evolve and the threads come together in the book is really impressive, even though a few of the surprises were predictable (were they meant to be?). Funny enough, the book is somehow understated but overly dramatic at the same time!
On a side note, it was also really interesting to learn about the life of a deaf-blind person and her family.

I love this book

I really enjoyed the audio version of Between Georgia. The music was a little distracting, but overall it is a very good audio book. This is one of my favorite reads.

Dog murders

So basically a story about people who kill dogs because it’s convenient for them, consider dogs can be evil, and blame dogs and not their owners for bad behaviors. A story about people who don’t get treatment for mental illnesses but pop a lot of Xanax

Excellent

This is my third Joshilyn Jackson book and my favorite. The characters are believable and well fleshed out, the story pulled me in, and I enjoyed listening to it from beginning to end. I laughed out loud a few times and actually burst into tears at one point- for the first time in many, many Audible books. Rare indeed is the author who can read their own work well. Barbara Kingsolver and Neil Gaiman are the only others that I knew of but Joshilyn Jackson has definitely joined their ranks!

A cast of quirky and strong southern women

Would you listen to Between, Georgia again? Why?

Life isn't always easy and it isn't always sweet, but it can be highly entertaining just the same. What a wonderful cast of women - each and every one as true to themselves as they could possibly be.

What other book might you compare Between, Georgia to and why?

A few hints of "Steele Magnolias" and "Crazy In Alabama".

Any additional comments?

Laughter and tears are always the best combination!

Sweet treat

This is my first Joshilyn Jackson book, but won’t be my last. Fun story, interesting characters, and a few surprises. Narration is fine, but not the best.

A decent effort

Joshilyn Jackson's debut novel, "Gods in Alabama", is a stunning work which transcends genre (it is in turns mystery, skilled comedy, family history and rich slice of southern life) and deserves to be called "literature". This follow-up book is not so finely honed, and while well-written and beautifully-read, it belongs strictly in the category of "chick lit". While a very fine example of the genre, it wouldn't have held my interest on paper for very long. Ms. Jackson's pleasant, down-home voice and skillful characterizations make for a fun listen, but after purchasing almost a dozen copies of "Gods" in hardcover and sending them to everyone I know, I will be keeping "Between" all to myself.
