Publisher's Summary

1945. The vote in the House of Lords as to who should inherit the Barrington family fortune has ended in a tie. The Lord Chancellor’s deciding vote will cast a long shadow on the lives of Harry Clifton and Giles Barrington. Harry returns to America to promote his latest novel, while his beloved Emma goes in search of the little girl who was found abandoned in her father’s office on the night he was killed. When the General Election is called, Giles Barrington has to defend his seat in the House of Commons and is horrified to discover who the Conservatives select to stand against him. But it is Sebastian Clifton, Harry and Emma’s son, who ultimately influences his uncle’s fate.

In 1957, Sebastian wins a scholarship to Cambridge, and a new generation of the Clifton family march onto the page. After Sebastian is expelled from school, he unwittingly becomes caught up in an international art fraud involving a Rodin statue that is worth far more than the sum it raises at auction. Does he become a millionaire? Does he go to Cambridge? Is his life in danger? Best Kept Secret will answer all these questions, but once again, pose so many more.

Firstly bit disappointed that Emilia fox was not one of the narrators, Mr Jennings was very good but needed it needed her narration too. Was she not paid enough? as I see she is not narrating any of the subsequent books.

To me this book was a little flat. Mr Archer seems to have sat on his laurels with this one but I am sure it will be full steam ahead with book 4, if the reviews are to be believed.

"No 3 book repeated what was in book 1 &2?!!"
What would have made Best Kept Secret: Clifton Chronicles, Book 3 better?

Dreadful. I kept thinking I'd made a mistake but went back to check no 3 book has a bit new information but loads of stuff I'd hard in the earlier versions - is this possible?!!

    "The surprises continue"
What did you like best about this story?

The story is so beautifully crafted, providing only the information that is needed. But repeatedly, even though one knows the information is provided for a reason, once the reason is revealed, the resolution holds a surprise. In between there are spots of humour, and all kinds of wonderful characters, like Mrs Tibbet. All the time, the background remains true to the 1950s.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Indeed and, therefore, a warning to others: do not start listening when you do not have the time!

    "Brilliant!!!!!"

Listened to this novel over two days, it was gripping, another cliff hanger ending. Just downloaded the next book, earphones on, poor dogs are being dragged out for another long walk so I can continue listening.

"Twists and turns, but still pretty dull"

The Clifton chronicles are becoming repetitive and boring.

Sure this has more twists and turns than any previously, but I found them dull and predictable.

    Very good performance though.

    "Really loving this series!!!"

I'm really really enjoying this series and have listened to the first 3 books one after the other and can't stop. About to listen to the 4th because in true Jeffrey archer style there was a HUGE cliffhanger at the end!

    "Entertaining at times"

I really enjoyed the 2nd book in this series but found this one tiresome by the end.. . The same old baddy and goody, black and white themes across all the books. Fisher=muttly and whoever the latest main baddy is = dick dastardly. That's pretty standard archer though really so can't complain too much. Story is generally decent light weight entertainment.
