1945. The vote in the House of Lords as to who should inherit the Barrington family fortune has ended in a tie. The Lord Chancellor’s deciding vote will cast a long shadow on the lives of Harry Clifton and Giles Barrington. Harry returns to America to promote his latest novel, while his beloved Emma goes in search of the little girl who was found abandoned in her father’s office on the night he was killed. When the General Election is called, Giles Barrington has to defend his seat in the House of Commons and is horrified to discover who the Conservatives select to stand against him. But it is Sebastian Clifton, Harry and Emma’s son, who ultimately influences his uncle’s fate.
In 1957, Sebastian wins a scholarship to Cambridge, and a new generation of the Clifton family march onto the page. After Sebastian is expelled from school, he unwittingly becomes caught up in an international art fraud involving a Rodin statue that is worth far more than the sum it raises at auction. Does he become a millionaire? Does he go to Cambridge? Is his life in danger? Best Kept Secret will answer all these questions, but once again, pose so many more.

Another exhilerating page-turner (or whatever the audio equivalent would be!) from Archer. As with the previous books in the Clifton series, 'Best Kept Secret' demands your attention from the start and grips you with a wealth of emotions as its characters ride high one minute and hit bottom the next. You never know from which direction the next surprise will come. Expertly performed by Alex Jennings, this audiobook will keep you rooted to the edge of your seat and leave you howling for more! Archer is truly a master of his art. Brilliant!
"Quantity not quality"
we were really looking forward to this book. It was ok a reasonable listen but what an ending I have logged on to audible to see if I had forgotten to download the rest of the book. An author shouldnot expect too much of a good thing, a series, 3 books good more you really have to have a better story to tell than this. I am not sure I want to pay for no4 to find out what happens next.
"Not up to scratch"
I really enjoyed the first two books in the series of the Clifton Chronicles, having followed Harry Clifton and his friends and family from his disadvantaged childhood into his boys-own adventurous adulthood. The third book was going well as we learned what happened about the Barrington legacy, even though the characters are either very good or very bad. But then it went completely off track into another world of gangsters and smuggling and I lost interest at that point.
I hope with the fourth book we return to the lives of Harry, Giles and the whole Clifton/Barrington clan.
"I despise myself for liking Jeffrey Archer but ..."
He's not the best writer, it's all a bit trite but I actually do give a toss about the characters and its a ripping yarn. And I will inevitably punch the little man even further up the rich list by buying the next episode. Please don't tell my lefty friends or Tory husband, I'll never live it down.
When an audio book makes you find excuses to listen to it you know its good.
I know Archer has got a bad reputation I suppose I'm not bright enough to understand why (I also like Dan Brown) but his books are totally engaging. I get fully involved with the story and the characters.
The only critisium I have is the why Mr Archer has left me hanging - he did not need to worry that I might not buy the next one it was guranteed now I'm abxious and frustrated.
I would highly recommend it - but what do I know!
"Archer at his best"
Great storyline, brilliantly written and superb narration from Alex Jennings.
Sat here twiddling my thumbs, waiting for the next in the series.
Come on Jeffrey, can we have a twenty hour working day please from now, until the book is finished.
"Best Kept Secrets"
Another winner from this author. How does he do it, time after time? The Clifton Chronicles continue to enthrall and surprise. I feel I know this family so well and can't wait for the next instalment.
"When will we know???"
looking forward to the next book, can't wait to find out what happened. What a cliffhanger
"Is this the end?"
I have been eagerly anticipating the next part of the story and relaxed listening intently.
Whether I have omitted to download the whole story OR we have been left with a cliffhanger I am not sure?
An enjoyable listen.
"Best Kept Secrety: Clifton Chronicles, Book 3"
I'd been looking forward to this book and mistakenly had expected it to be the last of the chronicles. I was disappointed and wondered why I'd bothered buying it. Although it says this is book 3 I felt as if most of it was missing because just as it got going it finished. It hasn't inspired me to want to continue reading the Clifton Chronicles.
