Publisher's summary

A master of terror and nightmarish visions, H.P. Lovecraft solidified his place at the top of the horror genre with this macabre supernatural tale.

When a geologist leads an expedition to the Antarctic plateau, his aim is to find rock and plant specimens from deep within the continent. The barren landscape offers no evidence of any life form - until they stumble upon the ruins of a lost civilization. Strange fossils of creatures unknown to man lead the team deeper, where they find carved stones dating back millions of years. But it is their discovery of the terrifying city of the Old Ones that leads them to an encounter with an untold menace.

Deliberately told and increasingly chilling, At the Mountains of Madness is a must-have for every fan of classic terror.

Very good

I think Lovecraft was pulling too much knowledge out of those old wall carvings, but otherwise it's a good bit of world-building. AUDIBLE 20 REVIEW SWEEPSTAKES ENTRY

Strange and psychological terror

The suspense builds as Lovecraft draws you into the terror felt by the explorers. Reminds me of Hitchcock's similar use of hints to increase horror.

Lovecraft is hard

This book is a great story but you must really pay attention. Lovecraft leaves no room to just slip in and out of a story.

A Classic Work, Beautifully Narrated by Edward Herrmann

This was classic Lovecraft at his best, an Antarctic expedition encounters terror in one of the final frontiers. After discovering ancient artifacts, a portion of the expedition group are killed and the head of the expedition decides to take a young grad student to try and find out what happened. What he discovers, shocks them both and causes the grad student to lose his mind.

This book is written in classic Victorian style with much flowery language. I read this book using immersion reading while listening to the audio book. The late, great Edward Herrmann brilliantly narrated this piece and really made it come alive. I am fairly new to Lovecraft, having read and heard only the Dunwich Horror before. He created a fanciful universe, one where I had to Google the monsters to get an idea of what he had in mind. For the moment, M.R. James is a new favorite, since I love his classic ghost stories. I will have to listen to the Lovecraft Historical Society's audio dramas to further enjoy these tales. It took a bit to get into it, but once it got going, it was a great story.

Good intriguing Fantasy

Kept me engaged. Lovecraft maintains a fantasstical mythos...as hunted at here. The voice over was well done.

Edward Herrmann!

I really enjoyed Edward Herrmann's performance.

I have tried over the year to like them, but I am not a big fan of classic books. I like the ideas behind the stories, I just don't like the presentation or style of story telling.

Vague, misty, unspeakable horrors!

Edward Hermann does a wonderful job reading this pseudoscientific yarn of things that go bump in the Antarctic night, about an expedition so shudderingly terrifying to the cool scientists who undertake it, that it must never be repeated. Never! Somewhere in the abyss, deep in the shadows, half glimpsed and indistinctly understood, lives a horrible ancient secret that looks and sounds like a nightmarish... [I won't spoil it] ... derailed. Pustular, foul-smelling, impenetrably dark and evil. Heads rolls and ichor oozes. Fly from the station! Fly you fools, fly!

Essential Lovecraft

This is the only novel Lovecraft ever wrote and while a short read it's also a great one. Knowledge of the Lovecraft mythos isn't required, but for newcomers I would still recommend reading a few of his short stories first, specifically Call of Cthulhu. Also, the narration is spot on.
