"Lovely story brilliantly read."
I simply love this story and it is made even better by the reader Jilly Bond. A lovely story of a typical bachelor falling for a common showgirl who has a fabulous figure and face and has made herself what she is. But the very kind and caring girl who will do anything for anyone then appears and slowly but surely he finds out how lovely she is. A pushy mother helps too as do the other wife/husband swapping characters who are very well described. Well worth a listen, I now need to find other books with Jilly Bond reading. Victoria Henry is a good storyteller.
"Spinsters can be eligible too..."
Veronica Henry's books are written with humour and a range of characters individual enough to keep your interest, sometimes developing over a short series as in Honeycote. This is a bit of a Honeycote add-on, and works for me.
A lot of strong female characters in this, Honor the single mother, Henty (my personal favourite), the downtrodden wife and mother who fights back, Richenda the successful TV soap actress and Madelaine, initially the archetype controlling mother to whom you warm as the book develops. In addition there's Sally, Richenda's mother, whose conversion is not quite believable, and a rather one dimensional florist femme fatale who seems about as plastic as her perfect 36Ds. This book is far more about the women than the men.
The 3 main male characters are reduced to supporting roles a lot of the time. Guy is the eligible bachelor of the title and is warm, kind but a bit other worldly on occasions, his main protagonist the bad boy vet, Johnny. My favourite is the insufferable Charles, who starts as a caricature selfish husband but ends rather differently.
Good mix of individual stories, steady pace to the book and excellently narrated by Jilly Bond. Only one voice grated - Barney the landlord's brief cameo, an ex-City type from Wild Oats here voiced as a local yokel. Recommend this as relaxing listening.
"This was bettert than some others"
I quite enjoyed this book, but I have just returned The Birthday Party which I absolutely didn't enjoy. The characters here are fun, but in the BP they were shallow, uninteresting and silly. I hope I can find another of her books I like but shall pick with care.
Took a while to get into the fact that the narration switches between characters. I loved the character of Honour, and the relationship between her and her son.
I enjoyed the general story however implacable but when did a size 10 become curvy and voluptuous ?
"Not one of my favourite Veronica Henry books"
I have listened to a few Veronica Henry books but didn't enjoy the story as much as I have her other books
