Publisher's summary

The 19th century. The Hell's Eight is the only family he's ever needed, until he meets the only woman he's ever wanted...

Caine Allen is a hardened Texas Ranger, definitely not the marrying kind. But when he rescues a kidnapped woman and returns her to town, the preacher calls in a favor. And Caine's honor won't let him refuse.

From the moment he beds Desi, Caine knows turmoil will follow. Desi might have the face of a temptress, but she also has a will of iron, and while she needs his protection, she's determined that no man will control her again. They establish an uneasy bond, but it isn't enough for Caine. He wants all Desi has to offer. He wants her screams, her moans, her demands...everything. Yet there's still a bounty on Desi's head, and keeping her sexually satisfied is proving easier than keeping her alive.

bleh

This could have been an interesting story if the author had any interest in developing it. She just dropped the most interesting threads and they petered out with really wimpy, uninteresting conclusions. This book was just a lot of long, long repetitive sex scenes that got boring. I couldn't wait for it to end. I'll give it one star because the narrator did a good job.

Too much sex!

Would you try another book from Sarah McCarty and/or Zoe Winslow?

no

Would you ever listen to anything by Sarah McCarty again?

no

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Zoe Winslow?

IDK

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Good story line. The concept is great, but author put far too much sex in, and it wasn't even good sex!

Can I give it 0 stars?

What is with this authors obsession with the anus? The story, is very predictable and I could live with that, but the author is really stretching her inability to write sex scenes that are interesting. This poor woman has been abused and the man who supposedly loves her has a thing for further abuse, trying to disguise it as her "wildness"

Caine's Reckoning

I was extremely disappointed in this book. I was looking for a historical romance. While the story line held some potential, the writer spent most of her time on explicit descriptions of sex and very little time on the actual plot of the story. I Fast-forwarded thru most of the book to find out what happened, only to be disappointed with a weak ending to the tale. I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing the book!!!

Caine’s Reckoning

I want to start off by saying that I am NOT skilled at “rhetorical analyzes” however after taking this class and listening to THIS book I am thinking “Caine’s Reckoning” has got to be the worst romance book that I have ever listen to. This book made no sense to me and it did not keep my attention. The story line was painful and the narration alone nearly caused me to stop listening within the first 40 minutes. The dialogue is so remedial if it were not for the relentless references to sex I would have thought this book belonged in a section for young adults. I kept half expecting, at some point in their conversation, for someone to blurt out “see cat run”. And as for “romance” it is nonexistent and the sex scenes were awful. I could not even imagine what the narrator was describing. With all of the complaints I thought that it was some hardcore sex going on, nonstop. But I must have missed it because what I heard was so boring and unimaginative I had to rewind it because I thought that I missed the lead up and despite the lead characters constant thoughts and insistence for the sex I was not impressed. Also I do not consider the ”naming” of the private parts randomly throughout the book as “hardcore” either. I found myself thinking that Caine was constantly doing his best to manipulate Desi, to get her to behave like a vixen in bed and the narrator’s tone aided his perversion. I cannot put my finger on it but suffice it to say that although she switched up her voice for each character the cadence in her voice remained the same so for me it sounded like someone just trying to switch up their voice. This book was over before it really got started. If I didn’t think that this book was so dreadful I would try to listen to it again just in case I missed something. It is sad to me that this book came from such a seasoned author no less. This is simply not a good “romance” story and if you are into “erotica” I suggest you look elsewhere too because there is nothing here.

Too much sex

Not enough story. By skipping over the sex scenes, I was able to cut 2 hours off the length of the book.

should have stuck to the story line

Part one of this book was pretty good. Part two paid too much attention to sex and not enough attention to the storyline. I had to fast forward through most of the second part. The only reason I kept listening was to see the conclusion of the plot that was set forth in part one, but was sadly disappointed when the book ended without resolving any of the plot issues.

I prefer some kind of story...

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I must not have read the other reviews. This is erotica not a story. I tried to listen but it was like an adult film...sex 90% - story 10%. As someone said sex in a variety of orifices and in detail--for chapters.

Would you ever listen to anything by Sarah McCarty again?

NO. I'm sure the adult film industry could put her to work.

Would you be willing to try another one of Zoe Winslow’s performances?

Not right away.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Caine's Reckoning?

I would have fired the author.

Any additional comments?

I wish I could return this but I waited too long.
