Året er 1986. Stedet Omaha, Nebraska. 16-årige Eleanor er netop flyttet til byen med sin mor og søskende - og sin utilregnelige stedfar. Hun føler sig småtyk og forkert, og da hun stiger ind i skolebussen på sin første skoledag, falder hun omgående udenfor med sit ildrøde hår og sine bukser, der holdes sammen med sikkerhedsnåle.
