Publisher's summary

Residents of Santa Clarita, one of the nation's safest cities, are jolted when a decapitated woman is discovered in the car of a missing realtor.

When detectives home in on her wealthy husband, a mystery begins to unravel, and the investigation heats up.

Los Angeles Sheriff’s homicide detective Dickie Jones has returned to work after recovering from gunshot wounds. His wife has left him, and his partner, Matt “Pretty Boy Floyd” Tyler, has been assigned a new partner.

A serial killer is on the loose, which might be just the diversion Dickie needs. When he and Floyd are reunited to hunt down the murderer, all seems right in his world again - until the veteran detectives discover that Dickie is next on the killer’s list.

Door to a Dark Room is a gripping crime thriller with twists and turns. Written by a former homicide detective, this book will take you beyond the yellow tape into the hearts, souls, and tormented minds of those who hunt evil.

LASD homicide detectives connect the dots

Loved it. From the mind of a senior homicide detective. Accurate, fast, funny, and insighful vantage point of how real law enforcement works homocides. Excellent storytelling, unexpected twists and turns, and a captivating tale. Performance worked great for me

This is a very welcome change for detective fiction fans. It is police procedural plus, interesting characters, well chosen HUMOROUS one liners and stories, minimal love lives of the cops, intelligent.... I'm so glad to find this author. Thank you Audible! BTW, I could give this 5
but I want to read more from this
writer first.

Reader's and listener's blood may run cold while enjoying this taut thriller.

I was asked to listen to the audio for Door To A Dark Room and to give a honest review. I already read the book, twice because it was so good. I usually do not listen to audio books, unless on a long drive, or involved in a project, i.e. painting, cleaning, etc.
Listening to this book was every bit exciting as reading it.
Danny R Smith is a retired homicide detective for Los Angeles County sheriff's department and is an outstanding author, perhaps the best, that can composite real situations into a functional story.
No other author since Joseph Wambaugh can capture the complex characteristics and idiosyncrasies of working law enforcement officers as well as Danny R. Smith.
Door To A Dark Room is Smith's second novel in the Vickie Floyd series. Detective Jones returns to city after recovering from gunshots wounds. He is involved with working a serial killer, which is the most violent killer that any author described. The killer, Leonard, is a total psychopath, who progressed from having sexual deviant behavior to a convicted murderer.
Leonard became "educated" in prison by first being a punk to a violent member with the Irish Mafia.
I do not want to give anything away. I will say, if this book does not get your heart pounding, someone should call for the paramedics.
In closing, Smith writes unparalleled authenticity that can only come from those that worn the badge.

CAPTIVATING, EXCITING, THRILLING!

I read about half of the book before I was gifted the version on audible as soon as it was available. I was determined to finish reading the book before I listened to it. However, once I started...I COULDN'T STOP.
The narrator captured the characters in the novel wonderfully. It was easy to know who was talking through his dictation and voice! This novel-and series-will captivate you, make you laugh with the solid one-liners, and thrill you! I can not recommend this book enough!!!
I feel through Danny's writing, a glimpse into a detectives world. It's quite exciting, since Danny is a retired detective himself. Danny Smith is a profound writer. I thoroughly enjoy the storyline of Dicky and Floyd and can not wait for the others to come out on audible!

Good police procedural with a little humor thrown.

This book kept my attention start to finish. Loved the characters. Wish more of the authors books were on audible.

A must listen to book

I have already read the the hard back version of "Door to a Dark Room". It is a book that you do not want to put down until you have turned the last page. And the same is true for the audio version. Tom Taverna did an excellent job with Danny Smith's exciting and gripping crime novel and giving voices and emotions to all the characters. If you loved reading this book, your going to love listening to it. I can say that while listening to this audio version, I can completely see this as a series on Prime or Netflix. I have read each and every one of Danny's books and am just as excited to hear them all the rest of them in the audio version. If your not a book reader, then listen to the audio version of this book and you won't be disappointed.

Eh

I can't recommend this book. His previous book was hilarious as the two dicks gave each other crap constantly. But this book had little to no banter between Dickie and Floyd. The story was pretty good however but I really missed the humor the first book had. .
