In der Kurzgeschichte The Reigate Puzzle verlangt die wahnwitzige Arbeitswut des beratenden Detektivs Sherlock Holmes ihre Tribut; ein Umstand, mit dem Arthur Conan Doyle seiner Figur ein gutes Stück Menschlichkeit verleiht. Zugleich spielt er im Laufe der Geschichte geschickt mit den Erwartungen der Leser, denn tatsächlich scheint Holmes auch während der Ermittelungen in Reigate nicht auf der Höhe seines Könnens und seiner Kräfte zu sein, wie Ich-Erzähler Dr. Watson mit Erstaunen und großer Besorgnis feststellen muss. Was ist mit Holmes nur los? - The Reigate Puzzle erschien laut sherlockholmes.fandom.com erstmals 1893 im Strand Magazine und wurde dann ein Jahr später mit zehn anderen Kurzgeschichten in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (Die Memoiren des Sherlock Holmes) veröffentlicht, der zweiten Sammlung von Holmes-Kriminalfällen. The Reigate Puzzle kennt man im deutschsprachigen Raum unter ganz verschiedenen Titeln; neben Die Gutsherren von Reigate sind das Die Junker von Reigate, Das Reigate-Rätsel, Der abgerissene Zettel (dies bezieht sich auf ein Indiz der Mord-Ermittlung), Die Squires von Reigate und Der Landadel von Reigate. - In unserer Hörspielserie Sherlock Holmes Legends geht – neben dem zentralen Fall in Reigate – die Rahmenhandlung in die nächste Phase. Nach mehreren Jahren der Suche spürt Holmes die verschollene Rahel Howells auf, und er kommt den Rätseln in der Londoner Unterwelt einen Schritt näher. Die Geschichte beginnt bei uns an Weihnachten 1886 und erstreckt sich bis Ostern 1887.
