Publisher's summary

Rachel Morgan will learn that the price of loyalty is blood in the next Hollows novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison.

Rachel Morgan, witch-born demon, suspected that protecting the paranormal citizens of Cincinnati as the demon subrosa would be trouble. But it’s rapidly becoming way more trouble than even she could have imagined.

While Rachel and her friends may have vanquished the trickster demon Hodin, his mysterious associate known only as “The Mage” is eager to finish what Hodin started, beginning with taking down Rachel’s power structure piece by piece.

With her world falling apart, Rachel desperately needs help. But with all of her supporters under attack, her only hope is to make a deal with the unlikeliest of allies. . . .

“Contains all the magical action, emotional tension, and snippy dialogue that fans adore.”—Library Journal

“Harrison delivers another page turner in the Hollows series, leaving readers wondering how Rachel will emerge from this crisis and which of her allies will survive it with her.”—Booklist

Still great if you love the series but needs greater character progression

Rachel should be a lot more badass by now. In future we should see her working a lot more closely with the city powers and seeing more of Ivy too. We should also see her telling the coven what’s what. She is a demon. Probably the most powerful of the demons. She doesn’t answer to the coven- she is at least equal to them in power. She didn’t use magic to her potential. And really- Lee got out of silver cuffs??!!

The story was great and the performance was spot on as always. And that ending will carry me till the next one, I just hope it won't take too long.

The best alternative world to fantasize about because of all the complexities. And, where being different is tackled at every turn. Marguerite Gavin is the best. Hands down, the best performer of audiobooks. Please keep this world going!! Thank you

Ignore the whiners

There are a bunch of reviews in here about how bad the story is, how Rachel has not grown, how she ignores advice, etc. The reality is, this story takes place only four years after the first in the series. Yeah, it’s been plenty more years that we’ve been reading them, but the timeline of the story and the timeline of reality are not the same.

The story is a good one. Rachel does have moments where she takes a couple of steps back. Everybody does that. In fact, whatever is your base personality doesn’t change a whole lot, even as you grow. At her core, Rachel is loyal, loving, fierce, and still a sick, weak little girl. The pain of her childhood will always be a part of her. She will always go a little nuts when people she truly loves are in danger. And when she is confused, she tends to be a little rash. She would not be Rachel, if those things did not remain true, just as Ivy would not be ivy if she failed to make a plan.

I was sad to see the backpedaling of Lee. I thought he’d made some miraculous growth, but I suppose I should’ve known that was not the case. I’m not sure why we did not get to see anything of Ivy’s main squeeze again I am also not entirely sure why Rachel and Ivy would still be clinging to Kiston. But all those things aside, this is a Hollows story, true to form. If you love the Hollows, I recommend it. If you don’t, we’ll don’t whine about why the character hasn’t changed completely.

As for the author, great job. My one tiny criticism is that I wish someone would point out how many times she uses the word “clearly” and how often it brings nothing to the sentence, or even adorns a phrase she never needed. Resist the urge to explain what’s perfectly illustrated, huh?

She never fails to leave me wanting more

Kim Harrison is without a doubt my favorite author of all time. I got her first novel as a gift in 2005 for my 15th birthday and have been a diehard fan ever since. Reading each and every book to the point of needing to replace them more than once.
Not one of her novels has felt boring, or had lulls (like a few other series with this many books has) and Demons of Good and Evil was no different. I love Marguerite Gavin’s adaptation of the characters. Bringing them to life and allowing my imagination a good foothold to run wild. (Though, I agree that her Australian accent could use a little work, the woman’s voice is STILL PERFECTION)
This book was fantastic. It was unfortunate that my brain figured out the Villain and one other heartache too soon, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying every syllable.
And that cliffhanger??? Left me crying and jumping up and down in the best way! I cannot wait for the next installment in the series!!
