Publisher's summary

Everyone is being discipled. The question is: What is discipling us? The majority of Christians today are being discipled by popular media, flashy events, and folk theology because churches have neglected their responsibility to make disciples. But the church is not a secondary platform in the mission of God; it is the primary platform God uses to grow people into the image of Jesus. Therefore, as church leaders, it is our primary responsibility to establish environments and relationships where people can be trained, grow, and be sent as disciples. There are three indispensable elements of discipleship:

  • Learning to participate in the biblical story (the Bible)
  • Growing in our confession of who God is and who we are (theology)
  • Regularly participating in private and corporate intentional action (spiritual disciplines)

Deep Discipleship equips churches to reclaim the responsibility of discipling people at any point on their journey.

Great Content and Thought Provoking

Deep Discipleship is perfect for anyone looking to make disciples in their church context. Primarily written to pastors and leaders, this book offers the why and how of making mature disciples. The reader for this audiobook didn't fit the material very well. His voice sounds like something that would be used to narrate a movie trailer. But it's not too distracting once you get used to it. Overall great book!

Great content!

I found this book to be very insighful and thought-provoking. It is one that I will re-read and pass on to those I'm leadership over me.

Great offering on the topic

Pastor J.T. English does a wonderful job of identifying the concern and outlining a plan of action. His heart for the church to grow is evident and his recommendations are backed by experience with trial and error. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to equip their part of the body to BE disciplines and MAKE disciples. Hope that is everyone.

Clarifying HOW to disciple. So helpful.

So many churches in the USA have this same philosophy, but so few churches actually apply the philosophy. I don’t think it’s because the churches in the US don’t care about discipleship. I think it’s because we don’t know HOW to disciple our members effectively. This book gives so much clarity to a MASSIVE problem in todays church. Could not recommend more.

Approachable & Practical

I'm reading four different books on discipleship for a Seminary class. Deep Discipleship and Transforming Discipleship by Greg Ogden were the best. If I were to list the top three I'd tie Ogden and English for the best (but they are the best for different reason's) you really have to read both. I think they appeal to different strategies, one will fit your context better. Third would be Jim Putman's Real Discipleship. What I like about each book is a clear and coherent definition of discipleship, a well thought out strategy, and clear instruction for implementation. If you looking for a great biblically sound source for disciple making and an executable strategy, pick up Deep Discipleship and the other two books. I'm confident there will be a standalone or a mix of ideas that will help you develop your strategy for making disciples.
