Publisher's summary

A new home, a new marriage, a new family. It's a lot to sort out. But before medicolegal death investigator Mattie can smooth out the unexpected chaos of her new life, duty calls. At the local ER, a battered and bruised teenage girl has been brought in by a mysterious man who claimed she'd fallen out of a car. The staff is suspicious, but while they attend to the teenager, the unidentified man slips out. Then the girl dies, but not before informing social worker Hildy Schneider that the man had her little sister as well.

Mattie's exam reveals forensic evidence of long-term IV drug use and physical abuse, findings consistent with Hildy's suspicion that the girl was a victim of human trafficking. They are able to confirm her identity as a teen who went missing six months ago, along with her sister - facts that are deeply unsettling to Mattie, who now shares a home with her husband's teenaged daughter.

Working closely with Hildy and homicide detectives, including her husband Steve Hurley, Mattie must delve into a dark underworld to stop the ruthless trafficking of human lives - before it's too late for another young girl...

Critic reviews

“A puzzler of a mystery. Annelise Ryan has created a smart and saucy heroine in Mattie Winston…What a thrill ride!” (New York Times best-selling author Jenn McKinlay)

Better and Better

This series improves with every book. I wait impatiently for the next installment. The subject matter was presented so skillfully, and sensitively.

Love This Series

I have read all of the books in this series and have enjoyed each one. The characters continue to grow and develop as they deal with very real problems that affect. I enjoy watching the character interact and work with each other. I look forward to other books in this series.

Dead of Winter

Matthew continues to be my favorite character. I am not going to happy when he grows up and out of the baby talk.

I enjoy the Mattie Winston series. I think the narrator does a terrific job with series. There are little funny (and some cringe-worthy) things that happen throughout the book. Once again, there is more than one mystery. more than one " thing " going on. That is something that is unique to this series. Usually everyone in town is focused on one thing.

Good story with lots of twists

I enjoyed listening & reading this book. It had a twist that I did not see coming in the cases. If you enjoy a mystery with characters that are middle aged and relatable then this is a story for you!

Not sure what happened

I’ve read or listened to every book in the series. This one was mediocre at best. I was especially put off by the food poisoning incident and the excessive description of the bodily results. Completely unnecessary and borderline juvenile. Not sure I will use an Audible Credit for any future books in the series.

I Love Maddie Winston

I love the humor in these books. This is no exception, although the insistence on reciting details from past stories is irritating and Jorjeana Marie’s acting is much better than her pronunciation. (I love her Wisconsin accents!)

Not as much fun.

The quirky, imperfect, financially precarious characters that I enjoyed in the beginning of this series are no more.
The description of the perfect new home, as if this is possible in the 21st Century was infuriating as this isn’t reality now.
And the weird jealousy that Maddie has towards any woman that Hurley speaks to and Hurley weirdly being jealous of any man Maddie speaks to is just stupid.
The celebration of this faux Nuclear Family Insularity is just unreal and worse boring.
