Publisher's summary

Not even the Void could hold Damien.

Damien’s return to Blackmist was victorious–but it wasn’t without price. Traces of the Void linger on, interwoven through his being. He learned much in his time spent within the space beyond time, but still ended up leaving with more questions than answers.

Henry’s former compatriots continue to advance their plans on the Mortal Plane, and Second’s power grows with every passing day. Everyone seems to have their own agenda, but the only thing Damien truly cares about is protecting himself and his friends.

When one of those friends goes missing in Mountain Hall, one of the other Mage Colleges within the kingdom, Damien decides that he’s done being a bystander. With Void magic pumping through his veins, he’s far from the scared student that first arrived at Blackmist.

And now, Mountain Hall is about to find out just how powerful he’s become.

Book 5 in the My Best Friend is an Eldritch Horror Series. It's slice-of-life mixed with LitRPG in a magic school setting. A slow build power fantasy from Actus, the bestselling author of Morcster Chef.

The anime training/filler arc

Not much is going on plot wise. it's still a good book but I'm ready for the next one. Also the narrator ran out of voices so a good amount sound the same. Maybe it's always been like that but the long wait cause me to notice it more.

Mostly Filler

While both Damien and Sylph significantly progressed in their skills, very little of the their adventures and quests moved the primary storyline much. There was a lot of social interaction with other characters in the kingdom such as, going out to dinner in high class establishment, Sylph playing matchmaker for Princess Yui, opps!, just Yui. Damien ends up somehow attaching other female characters in such a quantity that it's making Damien appear to be an incel harem collector. This book finds both Damien and Sylph becoming so OP'd that they believe they could even win against his father.

I'd sum it up as having lots of conversation but very little dialog.

I plan to continue on with book 6 but if it turns out top be another book about nothing, it will be the last book I purchase.

Peter Berkrot's excellent narration performance kept me listening where I would have stop with less talented narrators.

Slice of life

Nothing really happens. I will still listen to the next book, but this is skippable. A 10 minute recap will cover most of this book…well a fast recap, maybe a normal 20 minute recap.

I had hopes with the beginning of the book, but it never seemed to realize. Let’s hope it works for the next one.
